Trailer build question

Greetings all. I've started a trailer build based on a frame from a small generator trailer that I found. The base frame is all 1/4" material and solid (no decay). I'm interested in building up the tub sides using 1" square stock and then adding the skin material on the outside of the tub frame.

Due to costs, I'd like to use 1/16" wall 1" sq tube for the tub frame. Any concerns over strength for this purpose?

I will post pictures as this progresses. The axle is square tube with simple squared U-bolts to the springs. It has 5x4.5 hubs already, so I'll match my Rubicon's Moabs on 31" tires for the trailer.

Appreciate any thoughts.

Binski

Depends on what you want to use the trailer for. You can increase the strength of a sheet panel by putting a couple diagonal breaks (creases) in it.

Thanks for the tip on the skin ... don't know what I'll use there yet. My question is whether or not the 1/16 wall 1" sq tubing would be sufficient for the tub frame. Generally it will be a trailer to haul camping gear and should not exceed 1500 lbs total.

By "tub frame" you mean just the sides of the trailer right? Not any actual load bearing surface? If that's the case I think you'd be fine, but can't imagine the total savings would be that much between the 1/16 and 1/8 tube.
