When I built mine I used a toggle latch. If its set up right they work good. I had to monkey with mine to get it right.

i personally use a Knu-Vice model #2001 when adjusted right its rattle free and ive added a safety so even on the roughest trails it wont come undone

i like the toggle type latch better as there is no threads to seize up and its adjustable

pic of one of my modified Knu-Vice's

it comes with tabs for bolting it on but i didnt want to drill holes and leave the inside of the tube open to moisture and cause it to rust from the inside out so the tabs got cut off and we welded it on

I used the rear latch off the swing out tire carrier on a toyota 4runner. I can open it and close it with one hand and it has a built in rubber stop. I have a 35" tire on the back and have yet to hear it rattle in the 3 years it's been on there. make sure you grab the clasp catch when you get it. they're covered from the elements and the release is on a short pull cable that's easy to mount.
