roof top tent

anyone ever built their own?

SlinkyTJ 02-06-2008 09:24 PM

I haven't, but I've considered it. I've seen the little tent cots and it would be pretty easy to make some rails for one of those.

onlyjeepin' 02-06-2008 09:42 PM

yea i was thinkin bout attempting it this summer. it seems like it wouldnt be too much work, plus i dont feel like spending close to $1000 on something i will only use maybe 4 times a year

I have a little trailer that matches my jeep that I was thinking about mounting one of those on, but they sure are expensive. The tent cots are alot cheaper and look like they'd do the job.

Could you make something that could use a safari type roof rack as the foundation?

that is very nice, too bad they dont do something for the XJ. i have a surco rack and im not sure if it would hold up to a tent being mounted to it.

I'm not sure if I'd sleep in that! I'm 6'-1" 230ish :) and even alone w/out the wifey I'd be worried about that giving out.
Imagine having a date in there and your Well... you know!:teehee:

Am I really the only one thats thunk such a thing?
What kind of supports/hinges do they use?

The thing costs like 100k! The tent retracts automatically. It has a Queen size matress, running water, even a toilet (uh, I'll just go in the woods, thanks.) all sorts of stuff for people with too much money.

All too TRUE!
A good tree to block the wind or to lean against to take duce!

looks like the jeep might do a wheelie if you have too many people sleeping at the back of the tent

Comanche_ 03-08-2008 11:52 PM

It also makes the jeep INSAINLY top heavy.
