roof rack
1 Attachment(s)
Thinking about trying to turn a futon frame into a roof rack for my 79 Cherokee that can hold my spare tire. Any ideas?

I actually have that futon like that and I transport it on my roof and it looks like it would work as a rack but the actual seating area is just spot welded rod that pops eventually when you sit on it so it would need to be replaced if you wanted it as a functional roof rack. If you're looking for cheep I made my rack out of EMT conduit. Now I have welded my base for it but other then that it's all bolt together and it is one strong unit. Here is a thread of what I'm talking about if you want more pics let me know il take some.

If it were me I wouldn’t waste my time with that futon and start from scratch. I can think of several reasons not to use it but will just leave it at that.

Remember that the spare tire you want to mount on your roof is very heavy and needs a solid made rack/mount to hold it especially while bumping around off road.

Thanks for the advice and the thread. My uncle has some tools I can mess with so as long as materials are reasonable I should be able to think of something strong enough to keep everything secure. Either that or find a salvage yard and yank some stuff.
