I would make a divider inside just to make it into two compartments for better organization. I would like to see some pics when this is completed. I guess im just not use to seeing bumpers on the back, I drive a YJ and don't pay that close of attention to a factory TJ bumper.

Don't worry I will post pics for sure of the entire fabrication. I wont be able to get to this project until my suspension is done on my mustang and i can DD that instead of the jeep. (i figure about mid august) Right now i am still in the brainstorming phase of the project, but once i get to the acquiring material stage thing seem to go real quick. This may help visualize my idea.

If it was me, I would not remove the original cross member. I'm not opposed to a large tube, but I would taper it in starting at the width of the spare tire.

My thought is, I would rather land with the full vehicle weight on the bumper than my spare tire.

Good point. I will extend the hitch to be about 0.5" less than the tire sticks out. Then if something gets past the hitch it would just bounce off the tire. I may add sloping gussets under the hitch to help things slide off of it too. I am thinking in the bumper (flush with the bottom) will look the best.
