It actually sounds like a good plan. T&T sells a rear crossmember that wells in place of the stock one, but they don't offer a receiver. A bumper mounted to a stronger reciever would be awesome. I got rear ended a couple of months ago, and my smittybuilt bumper bent, along with the rear crossmember. I would say go 1/4" steel and make it BEEFY.

I need a tire carrier for my YJ, nothing extra or special. Bumper with tow-able hitch would be cool too.

What would a regular bumper/carrier combo cost me?

Late, huh... it is only 9:45. He has lots of bumpers to build, why would you want him to end his work so early???

Just Kidding Eddie, I hope you enjoyed your thanksgiving, and avoid any black friday mess.

Trust me on this you want a Groundpounder rear bumper these things are built way way better than anyone else's by far and he'll build it the way you request.....

I got more than any of the one's the mail orders can offer.

Hey Matt! I'm jealous.. Did you know I'm from the Big Island?

As for being on the computer late... I had just got home from the shop I need a cot at the shop.. and internet. Then, life will be complete.

Incidently, this is what I was working on... a buddy wanted a "bed mounted" tire carrier. He wanted it to fold down for daily driving and raise up a bit for the trail (so he could mount his cooler under it).

That's cool Eddie I can't tell from the pix but did you also tup a bushing in where it slides so the wouldn't be any rattle.

I bet if you did have a cot and internet you wouldn't leave that shop at all. the wife would miss you.......did you ever sweep up that grinding dust yet?

Later

Cool Rig Eddie! I passed it along to a buddy of mine, as I think it would be awesome in the back of his Commanche. Awesome work as usual!

Be well,
Richard

Thanks guys!

All the connection points were YJ bushings in 1.75" DOM tube. Should be relatively "rattle-free".

I think I may make more at a later date. However, I'll probably just cut a single triangle-shaped base with the center tabs having enough holes to allow travel from near vertical to horizontal. That would make shipping easy too.. just fold it flat, wrap in plastic, slap a label on it and ship. Maybe do 2 different length "A" Frame sizes.. the one in the pic was 24" tall... maybe I'll do another one about 30" tall or so. I'll have to put that on the back burner until after the Holidays.. gotta fill a bunch of Xmas Bumper orders.. Santa has to drop them down chimneys..

Reading through a bunch of these posts (college finals procrastination at its best) and seeing the pictures has motivated me to build myself a back bumper and tire swing for my tj. My family has a metal fab shop and when i go home a couple times a year all I do is weld, and now i have a project. Because I'm going home for the holidays soon i need to get a list of materials to my father so its there when i get home. I saw the list of materials in the first couple pages and am going to roughly use the same material. The question I have is (because i have not really worked on a cj I'm not sure how the material list would change for a tj for lengths and such) should I add to some of the lengths on the material list or just use what you roughly said? I just don't want get home and have pieces cut to large and waste material or have not enough material. I won't be able to take measurements and such until this weekend, so its making it hard to come up with the perfect measurements to send to the father. Thanks and awesome bumpers!
