Swing out tire carrier for 2010 JK with Body Armor Tubular bumper

I'm in need of a swing out tire carrier for my JK. For the past year my spare has been riding in the back of my Jeep and it's making me crazy. My husband started fabricating something for me, but between his work schedule and our recent move I'm not going to be seeing that any time soon. My question is would it be possible to fabricate something that would fit on my current bumper and approximately how long would it take to make? My specifics are listed on my profile and as of right now they won't let me upload any pictures (not sure why but I will upload some as soon as I can).

First.. welcome to the forum ammochik!!

Hmmm... to be honest, the best way to add a swingout to an existing bumper, is to have the vehicle (or at least the bumper) in the shop. However, shipping a large bumper like that back and forth would be pretty expensive.

At this moment, I still don't have a production JK bumper. The few that I've done, were custom built on the vehicle.. with the vehicle in my shop.

My suggestion would be to locate a local fab shop capable of doing the addition for you. The easiest way to locate a good shop, would be to locate/join a local Jeep Club. They will have the skinny on the shop(s) that do good work at a fair price. Might even find someone in the club who fabricates.

Thanks for the warm welcome! We were very involved in the Jeep Club world for a while but gave it up because of all of the DRAMA and lack of actually doing anything to benefit others. It's a long horrible story. My husband is the Jeep go to guy around here and most of the work from our local fab shops is not up to our standards. Like I said, he started cutting the mounting plates and stuff over a year ago to make a swing out for my current bumper but between having a baby, moving, and his job (he works 24 hour call) the carrier has been put off. I guess if all else fails I can always sell my bumper and purchase another one that I can get a carrier for.....I just haven't found one that I like. I guess I'm sort of picky. ;-)

Well.. I think I'm gonna end up making my own bases for the Blitz/Scepter style of gas cans..

Messed around for a few minutes yesterday. I'll probably raise the front/back lips a couple inches to prevent the cans from rocking around.. and hog out more steel to lighten it up a bit.

Do/can you make a slightly different version from the norm to help hide a BL as well as maybe add 1" more clearance out back? This has probably come up but a quick search did not yield a good result, even though I could've sworn I saw someone say they had this version before. Maybe on another thread. Thanks!

Actually, most swingout tire carriers hide a body lift pretty good. The main swingarm is at about the same height as the "gap".

When you say "add a 1" gap", are you referring to spacing the bumper farther back? If so, it can be done.. but as you move the bumper farther away from the Jeep, you increase the leverage exerted on the mounting system. It's usually the thin crossmember that pays the price.. bending and cracking.

I guess I wasn't very specific. I guess I was thinking move the entire bumper assembly up 1", essentially moving the mounting points down 1" where they weld to the back of the tube. I was wondering if that could be done without the mounting showing at the bottom of the tube and if the frame tie ins and reciever would still work. I guess a good side shot could probably tell me that though. I will search some more.

I don't think that's possible. It sits at the same height as the stock x member.

Yeah that is what I assumed but figured it didnt hurt to ask. Post #1600 pretty much shows what I was getting at. Oh well, good thing that swing out hides the BL. This is definitely next on the list!

I can assure you this is the best purchase for your Jeep. It's so strong and it hide the BL. I ran this bumper for awhile and loved it till the day I modified my frame.
