Overhead console write up yj

Ok so I built an overhead console for my YJ, but the idea could be used with any CJ or TJ. I thought I would put my ideas and pics of the process as it went along so so maybe people wanting to pursue something like this might get some ideas.

First off I made a frame of 1.25" square tubing going from the windshield frame at the appropriate angle and coming up snug to the roll bar.

Then I cut out the bottom plate out of sheet metal

with the plasmaaaaaaa

So I first mocked up a peice of sheet metal with the type of drop I wanted for my head unit and CB and scanner

Then I measured up and drew up my cut outs for my devices. minus the scanner at this point

then measured and cut out with the plasma the sides for the drop downs

mocked up and tacked up the final positions for the drop downs for the devices with the sides tacked on

welded it up and hit it with some bedliner

with the goodies in it

with all that metal above my head i decided to pad it up with some pipe insulation

please excuse the glue in these pics

so thats it! im really happy with how everything turned out. any questions let me know

Nice. I like the way you angled the mounts up into the plate. Really clean.

Thanks. building one for my buddy soon. he only has a CB and his cd player, so I need to think of something awesome to do with the extra space that his will have. any thoughts?

Switches! You could use the extra space to place switches for accessories. For that matter, you could make a 3rd drop down angled piece, but have a blank face plate instead. Then mount a row of switches in the face plate.

It would be cool to sit in there and flip all the overhead switches, like you are firing up Airwolf for a mission! ( I guess that is showing my age )

Hell yeah AIRWOLF. Make sure the switches have the little red flip up covers though. Way cooler looking.

The rifle mounts is a great idea. I use my YJ for varmint hunting transportation. I am going to steal that idea!

You could also mount an overhead light in there. So at night you could find stuff you might drop or whatever.
