I bought my Pro-Tools bender from Mike Green off the pirate board too, www.mikegreen4x4.com great product and Mike knows a ton about the ProTools bender, give him a call if your not sure what to get he'll spend the time explaining it and giving suggestions.
PS - mike's yellow CJ was on the cover of JP a few months back!

Pirate just posted these up of a rollover that happened at 43rd annual TDS event. Just another dumby that thought it would be good to build a cage out of pipe..

There are WAY more and bigger issues as to why that failed then the material choice. If you really know what you are doing, you could probably build a cage to hold up to that roll with pipe. Why, when tube is stronger and lighter is up in the air.

That, and the poor penetration were the first things I noticed (after the pipe thread..hah!), but look a little closer, the one pipe is cut half way through! I'm not sure what the deal is there...but that's just crazy!

thread has been dead for a while. Anyone actually build a cage yet?? What techniques did you use? Any ideas used that have been discussed?

I just went back and browsed thru this entire thread looking at pics of cages. I just got my Model 3 bender and a 1.75"x6.5" die. I've already got a cage in Big Lime but I'm gonna redo some areas and beef it up a bit. Also, gonna do some radiator protection. I'll post pics when I'm done.. hopefully in the next week or two...

Just had my cage "repaired". Good design, bad craftsmanship. SOB did a killer job with the repairs, and it should be good for at least few moderate rolls or one really hard roll.
The factory B and C pillars were used as a base to build off of. The cage was originally built with 1.75" OD .120 wall DOM. The X between the B pillars was cut out, due to space restrictions with the seats, the dash and windshield bars were cut out and replaced with 1.75" OD .120 wall HREW due to short tubing being filled in with a welder, and the main hoop was sleeved at the B pillar for the same reason. The C pillars were tied into the frame with a sandwich plate and 1.75" OD .120 wall HREW, and a harness bar was installed at the B pillars. Seat bars were built with 1.75" OD .120 wall HREW, and the seats were bolted to 1/4" plate tabs. The cage is bolted in 6 places with 3/8" Grade 8 bolts. 4 front and rear with sandwich plates to frame tie-ins, and in the factory location at the B pillars, where the body crossmember attaches directly to body mounts. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
