need advice

new jeep owner here. recently bought an 87 wrangler body in good shape and engine runs good. at first glance i thought the frame was in good shape but when i took it to get inspected it failed because the frame is rotted in rear where by leaf spring shackles and the body is rusted where it mounts to frame. my question is what (if any) is the best way to fix this with out replacing the frame??? and if there are any jeep specialist near olean ny

Replace the rotten section with new metal. Depending on how much of the frame is damaged sometimes its better to get a different frame.

Get a picture or two of the area and post them up. This would help us to help you with what to do. There are a few guys on here that can point you in the right direction.

VERY common problem with a lot of YJs. I'm not usually one to simply suggest searching the forum for "YJ frame repair", but there are so many threads on this subject that linking them here could fill a page and still only cover 5% of those available for reading.

If the frame isn't so far gone as a couple mentioned above, there are two main options, use a frame repair kit or pre-fabbed section from vendors like Auto Rust Technicians or salvaged frame section from someone like Davey's Jeeps, or fabricate your own using plate or rectangle stock.

Just an FYI, if you have bad rot in those two locations, I'd also look carefully at the cross member just in front of the fuel tank (2 body mounts there too), behind the fuel filter, and around the steering box mount. All areas as notorious for frame rot as those in which you've already located a problem.

Post up some pics like the other said, lots of great help here from some terrific fabricators!

From the looks like I would suggest that you pull the tub off and repair the tub around the supports. Then tackle the frame after cleaning it up some. Now this would get you pass the inspections. Now with that said. It will not an easy job to do put is a doable. So do not give up on the Jeep. It is saveable!

If you don't want the jeep Ill take it. I need another project to really annoy the wife. She already hates the current CJ project along with the diesel truck I'm going to build to haul it. Think it has something to do with the fact the garage smells like gear oil most of the time.

Call some of the local fab shops for a price on welding. Its not hard to get the frame setup to replace a section. The hardest part would be do you have the room to pull the tub off.

I'm really not posting this to discourage you, but anticipate some issues behind the diamond plate on there too. I think it's very doable, but it would certainly be best to get that tub off and make sure you can find every issue and get it cut out and replaced.

Cool! It seems many people like to ignore rot problems when they see the first signs and slap some diamond plate over them for the sake of appearance.

So have you come up with a game plan?

I hate to say it and no offense. there is no way it would be worth paying anyone to repair this. It would be very expensive as once the body gets off a lot more will be seen.....................Pandora's box

If you had the tools the TIME and money to rebuild this body and frame it would still be a labor of love. I can buy a almost rust free still factory paint Yj out here for much less than my time to rebuild that alone.

Man I see some freeking sweet older jeeps out west for not much more than people pay for a rusted out. You just have to be willing to travel. I know a nice Lj 32K on the clock 2004. still has the factory tires never touched. has extras. looks like it just come off the floor at jeep. To bad the one I have keeps me broke.

When buying Jeeps you REALLY need to know what to look for and where.
