my roofrack build

I got some steel for free, so I decided to build a roofrack.

Here is a pic of the steel.

I decided to make it by 48"X60"X6"

It is getting close to completion. I just need to fab up the feet, but the bottom supports in, lay the expanded metal, prep for paint, and paint.

So here it is.

Its gonna be heavy, but strong.

i havent taken a scale to it yet, but i am guessing as shown in the pictures above somewhere between 50-70lbs. i havent made any more progress yet because i need to pick up some more steel. i plan on doing that tomorrow.

on a side note, does anyone know of any ideas for tie down points that i can weld on? the cheaper the better.

do you have a factory roof rack? I'm planning on removing all of the factory hardware and bolting down some flatbar to the roof, and welding my roofrack to that. I only found one example of another person doing that (http://www.fivezerofive.com/main/index.php?itemid=309) so I'm not sure as to how strong it is. I figured I'll start with this, if it feels flimsy I can just add gutter mounts later (I just really hate the look of gutter mounts)

that should be plenty strong for a mount. that is how i plan on doing mine.

for my mounts i found some d-rings for a trialer at harbor frieght. seen here. i am not using the tabs, i plan on just welding the rings directly to the frame.

just an update, i was able to weld in all the bottom supports, and grind down all of my horrid looking welds. i still need to weld in my tie down points, buy/put in the expanded metal for the "floor," and fabricate the mounting system.

i am trying to decide if i am going to paint or powdercoat my rack. if i can get a deal on powdercoating i will do that, if not then i am going to spray paint it with rustoleum hammered.

let me know what you think so far.

and here is a picture of the rack just set on top of my heep just for kicks.

FINAL PICTURES!!!! So i finished this project a while ago, i just forgot to take pictures and post them up. so here they are.

Just to show the gap between the roof and the bottom of the rack...

There is a gap, not much of one but it is there.

What do you guys think?

It is really heavy to be honest. I would say probably 70 to 100lbs. It could be more but I am not sure. Once it was done, and I was painting/installing it I used a forklift to make my life easier.

Looks good.

What did you end up using for tie down points? It looks like chain links - which is what I was going to recommend when I started reading the thread.

Also - what's the engine for?
