Louvers without a press

I've heard about fabricating louvers by cutting a slit with a saw and then bending the louver up, not requiring a press or dies. This seems like a good way to louver a hood which normally would require a large(expensive) press.

Does anyone know how to do this? What is the process called?

Thanks!

Seems like that methhod would leave a somewhat inconsistent result..

I've seen different sized "patches" of punched louvers for sale. You could just pick up a few of those and rivet them in place. I've seen a few Jeeps with them and they looked pretty good.

Never tried it that way, but my guess is the louvers will look terrible. But... go to the junkyard and buy the cheapest hood you can find. Drag it home and give it a try. Who knows, you may figure out a way to make it work. If you're really interested in learning sheet metal work, there are all kinds of inexpensive books on the subject. And try Youtube...

I have been wanting to do this to the hood of my 84 CJ-7 for 20 years.

Havent found anyone or easy way to do it outside of buying a panel with the louvers on them and add to the hood.

I was thinking of the louvers on the side of the hood.

If someone knows a easy way let me know.

You could always get a FJ40 hood....

I bet a swag finger brake press could be modded to fit a pair of louver dies cheap enough to do it semi real.

I agree. But I also bet that two 6" length tapered 1/2" round stock welded to each end of a length of 1/4" plate could be driven in at an angle to a slit cut by a cutoff wheel. This matched with some foundation under the hood could form a pretty close facsimile of a louvre.

It'd probably look like crap but hey, have you seen my Jeep?
