Looking to buy a welder....

I am looking to buy a welder and wonder what you guys look for. What kind of ratings do you think it should have? Can a "light duty" welder get what i need done (stuff around the house and with the jeep) or do I need to get something more hardcore? I was looking into getting a TIG system, would that be the right choice for what I want to do (mostly stupid stuff, nothing serious atleast at first)

Any input or ideas on a strater welder would be great Thanks!

IMHO Tig is not the welder to start with. TIG is hands down the most difficult welding method to learn. However, TIG will allow the most flexibility in what kind of metals you can weld. Also, TIG units are about the most exspensive type of welder you can buy.

that being said, I would suggest a MIG. You want one that runs on 220V. you get a better duty cycle that way. My recomendation is the Miller Millermatic 175. Its not too exspensive (around 700 or so) its incredibly flexible, and is a great unit.

I say get a TIG unit if you can... Jump right in. If you get a MIG you'll only later wish you had tig when you have to weld non-ferrous metals. It's not that difficult and you should learn it anyway. You will never regret it...
