Jerry can mount ideas

Alright ever since I did my rear axle stretch and modded my tank to clear the diff I have ran out of gas twice now( inacurate gauge ). Both times with my 5 year old son as co-pilot . I recently built a BERSK inspired swing away tire carrier and would like to incorporate some jerry can mounts. What are some unique ways others have mounted them to there swing away? Im looking at as light weight as possible. Pics are encouraged.

First, I haven't done this but I'm thinking along the same lines as you. I would purchase the cans and mounts and then place them in various spots until the best place is found. Then weld up the appropriate mounting brackets.

I would also mod the fuel guage sending unit, since this is the real problem. If your gauge reads more gas than is really in the tank, bend the metal float arm up a couple inches.

I hope this helps.

I love the thought of using a Jerry Can, but have you looked into a Rotopax can? It's slimmer than a Jerry and only requires a central mounting point....

What I'm getting at is... You come up with an design and I'll go with it (that's the beer talking)...

But I'd love to mod my LoD carrier to use Rotopax vs Jerry cans.

The real problem with the gas tank is not necessarly the sending unit its the way I had to mod the pick up tube to fit with the modded tank. I cut a dimple in my tank skid them molded my poly tank to fit. This made a large hump in the bottom of the tank requiring me to get creative on how to fit the pickup tube. I don't really feel like pulling the tank again to get it more accurate I just know if I'm at a 1/4 tank I better be pulling up to a gas station soon.
But alas the tank is not the topic of my thread its about the best location for a jerry can mount.
I already have three jerry cans with a spout. I would like to take the idea I have seen on here before and make two tank holders and make one jerry can a nifty tool box. Please more ideas I appreciate the input thus far.

Well you have the jeep with the tirecarrier and the cans so you might as well take the next step and put them together. Just hold the cans in place and see where they would work best with what you have to work with and what you can mount to.

Remember if you do mount the carriers to the swing away you will need to do so in a way where your vision will not be blocked as well as take into account for the added weight no the tire carrier.

I would suggest something like the RockHard Can mounts. They bolt on to your carrier. If you only mount 1 I would say put it on passenger side since it will put more of the weight nearer to the pivot point. They are a bit pricey though. You might be able to make or have them made cheaper.

Here is the link to Qtec page: http://www.quadratec.com/products/12066_90X_PG.htm

If you buy through them I would PM the vendor on here and get free shipping.

I have done that. I have the means and ability to build whatever I come up with. I will most likely build them just like the Rock hard mount that diverdown posted. I was just trying to get some ideas on what works best. I won't mount them in a way that blocks view. I know my spindle can handle it (3500 #) plus I use an aditional attachment to the tailgate with a pin up high for added support. I'm also brewing up a better idea for my latch. I will post those idea up as well. Thanks for the input so far guys keep um coming.

I put mine on the pass side and offset the tire to the drivers side. My holder is 2x2 angle welded in a rectangle (not exactly light) the top hold down is not done yet.

Be careful where you put them and make sure you can still open the top with them on. Mine will only open if the sloped front of the can is forward.

Got any pics?? Mine is offset about an inch to the pass side, same as Stock Yj offset.

I like this idea but its close quarters to the back of the tub. I may still go this route its just sitting there right now I haven't welded anything yet.

That looks good, and looks like your only real option unless you move the tire or tail light. You could put one on each side. I'm currently building a bumper fr my XJ and I'm thinking of a barn door setup: 2 swing outs one for the tire and the other for the cans.

i went the rotopax or Koplin root some years back. it gives me just over 3 gallons which is enough to get me off the trail or freeway in a pinch without being to heavy. i have some of the 5 gallon Koplin carriers too that i use if we are going out in a much bigger group.

Simple mounts on either side if the tire, on the carrier.

ran a 2nd cross piece to lets the cans have a better place to sit.

add the can mounts and hit with some bed liner.

Finished from the inside

does not hang into the bed.

Stealth from the rear.

Thanks for the replies. I have been extra busy with redesigning the latch mechanism for my carrier and making my spindle double shear. With all that extra weight of the gas can I don't want any chance of failure. Here is the only pic I have at the moment.
