how's it look to you
I recently finished making this bumper for my YJ.
http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=2130445565&idx=1 I think the hoop angles too far forward. What do you think? It's only set at 30 degrees, but it sticks way out. Maybe with a winch back there I'll like it a little better. Anyway, you all think I should cut it off and try again, leave it, or start over and sell this one? I would have fixed it, but, like an idiot, I had it powdercoated before I saw what it looked like mounted up. It started as a 54" link of 3"x4" tube with 1/4" walls....think it'll dent (heh) The pipe hoop is 1.5" sch40 so it should be plenty strong too. The D-rings are 6k lbs I think and the mounts are 1/4"x 2" flatbar. It was pretty fun to build other than the hoop problem which is my fault. If anyone wants one, e-mail me...I may be able to stick some more together this semester. It's way better than welding up V-grooves all day.

I'm gonna be a prick but it looks ok, but don't use pipe. Also are you planning to use those D rings? How are those attached to the bumper?

So what do you suggest I use to make a "tubular" hoop? Every hoop I've seen is some kind of pipe or tube; even the bolt on for the Warn rockcrawler looked like steel tube.......
The d rings will be used if they need to and are put on with a 6010 root and a 7018 cover...the actual ring will break before the weld; I promise. So you say cut it off and replace the sch40 pipe with something else...any suggestion on the material? |

There's a lot of debate over the use of tube (like DOM or HREW)-vs-schedule 40 or 80 black pipe. Differences in strength, crack resistance.. etc. I think these have more to do with structural pieces like rollcages, frames and suspension pieces. For something like a bumper hoop to mount lights on.. it's fine. I would however, suggest running a couple of kickers back to the bumper or frame horns to brace the hoop in case you bump into something. Otherwise, it'll fold back pretty easy. Other than that, it looks good. Matter of fact, it looks alot like the first bumer I made for my green CJ5. That bumper is still in service on my wife's CJ5 now. Same light tabs and everything...

Hey... maybe if I ram something it'll fold back enough to look decent. I still think it stacks way too far out.
Thanks though. |

Yup, pipe is JUUUUST fine for non-structural stuff. I would suggest using either HERW or DOM tubing on anything that is going to be critical. It looks ok, but running some supports would make alot of difference.
