Homemade Jerry Can Mount

Decided to buy a Blitz Jerry can and base on eBay a couple of weeks ago:
5 Gallon Blitz Jerry Can
Jerry Can Mounting Base

Both items, shipped, were around $51. After arriving, I did some research and saw some ideas for mounting plates. As I don't have a welder, I decided to head to the local tractor supply store and see what I could rig up. I had some scrap sheet metal laying around that I planned on using for the base, but then needed to figure out how to mount it. I decided to use the (2) open holes for the spare tire on my LoD tire carrier, which required a little grinding on the LoD mounting plate. I next decided to pick up some 1/2", 6" hex tap bolts and bunch of 1/2" nuts and washers and began assembling. I ran with this all last week with a full tank, just to see how sturdy it was going to be and I had no problems. I'm not going to have it on all the time, but figure it will be nice the next time I head out to the trail. Here are some pictures of the end-product:

I figure total materials, aside from the Blitz base and can, were around $12 (including an allocation for rattle can that I had and the sheet metal).

I don't want to rain on your parade......

And I really hate being critical when someone is just starting out but......

If those 2 bolts are all that is holding that can on it will bend over the first bump you hit with the can full, a can of gas weighs somewhere over 60lbs. A third bolt, creating a triangle pattern would be much stronger but still possibly bend under the weight.

Do you think using a Grade 8 bolt would help out? Filled, it weighed a little under 35 lbs. (which probably isn't the most precise as I used a standard bathroom scale). However, after a full week of driving (nothing to rough but a couple of seasonal roads), it still seems to be fine. Do you think if I welded some steel tubing over the bolt it would strengthen it more than it is now?

I imagine those stacked nuts (sounds funny saying that ) basically turn those long bolts into 3/4" solid rods. That's probably why their still not sagging.. but I think they will eventually. I'd rather see a center tube (maybe like 2" square?) running from the center (between the two nut stacks) out to another plate with at least 3 bolts (triangle pattern) attaching it.

Who knows?.. your setup may hold up. However, kind of scary to have a 5 gallon gas can (full of gas) fall off at highway speed. Better safe than sorry.

Yeah -- That definitely wouldn't be a good thing. Thanks for all the feedback. If I didn't have the 3rd brake light mounted, it would nothing to add a third mounting point. I guess its time to go back to the drawing board on this one.

If it will help you feel better about dropping $20 on it, I can throw in a pack of lollipops for you (legit offer)?

Cheers.
