front bumper design

well I've had the idea to build my own front bumper but the main problem has been the design. i don't have a bender or a press, so this would all be down with limited cutting welding and grinding tools. it took me some time to figure out a design that would be easy to do with my limited tools.

this is what i have come up with

its based off of jcrs bumpers, nates 4x4 winch bumper, and aj's customs.
let me know what you think. i still need to design the frame tie-ins but its to dam cold to take measurements. also i could use some help with bracing/ gussets on the back side

What tools do you have to build with? I built a front bumper kind of like that except it goes up on the sides so the winch sits down a little lower than the sides of the bumper. It has similar angles to yours though, which I like. I did all my cutting with a torch and cleaned the cuts with a 4.5" angle grinder. All the welds were done with my new to me Lincoln 180HD, gas shield and .030 wire. I used 3/16" plate for the entire bumper except the winch plate portion. It is 1/4". I incorporated a steering box guard into mine. Looks like yours is done that way too?

yep, its google sketchup, and yes its free. i found it really easy to get started, more than solid works, or auto cad.

on sketchup you can show the dimensions like this and post it.
(This is a rear bumper i was desgning but am pursuing other ideas (i dont have a torch so I can't redily make long cuts, so I would need to buy a bunch of specific width flat steel, and would end up with way more than I need.. I can only get 20ft sticks that I know of around here).)

kettles, one thing i found that worked some what well for long cuts is a circular saw with a cut off wheel instead of a blade. a lot of sparks, but cuts better than a jig

hate to revive a dead thread, but here is the outcome. its about 95% done just need to cap the ends, weld the winch plate in, some gussets, get another tow hook(autozone was out at the time) and possibly add a hoop.

don't mind the booger weld. welder wasn't feeding right. its all better now

thoughts on a hoop? not a stinger, but a small prerunner style

Your bumper really looks great. I'd move that tow hook though. In a hard pull you'll distort the top of that tubing.

Good job so far!
