It will all be tig welded and also I am mounting a smittybilt xrc8000 winch and want to know if 1/4 in would be fine? It will have 6 bolts total to the frame(4 on top and 2 on bottom all grade 8)

This was a 3/16" bumper/winch with the full load as well as increased angle force, 1/4" will work perfect. As a side note, your local steel shop should be able to create a small 1" uppward bend at the back side of the top piece of the bumper (nearest the grill). Shouldn't cost more than 20 bucks to have them do and it will increase the strength and rigidity significantly.

I like to build stuff. Want to know what I build, you can google it HERE

That's for input guys. I went ahead and cut my top plate out of 1/4". Luckily I have a plasma cnc machine right at my finger tips. And those are all the plates going in to the bumper

If you don't have the capacity to bend a lip at the rear, you can weld one in place. As mentioned, you really should have a lip to stiffen that plate. Otherwise, a hard pull will cause the plate to bow up in the center.

Ive been making XJ bumpers for about a year. I use 3/16 for the shell & 1/4 for the tie ins & gussets
