DIY Rear Bumper

Simple bumper really

3/16x5x2x80 rectube - main body and wrap around
3/16x2x24 flat stock - bottom frame tie in
1/2x24 round stock for safety chain hooks

Already had a receiver, but next time I would probably make the receiver.

Still need to remove a broken bolt on the bottom side of the frame and add in the bottom frame tie-ins.

And some build pics along the way

I was actually tempted to leave it like this...

But common sense kicked in...

With a 15° angle

Still not enough, so then to 30°...

But it still did not look quite right so I chopped off the leg and put another 30° bend in it.

You are my new favorite poster. I have been looking for pics of how people attach their bumpers and you are the first person I have seen to do so. I still have yet to get a chance to yank off my rear bumper to really get a good look so this helps out a lot.

Thanks. Yes, I do plan on making a tire carrier - with 35-37's in the future, I have no choice.

I will give you the fore warning: with only a 2" section in the rear bumper, the depth of the trailer plug comes into play.

You will need to ensure the trailer plug lines up horizontally with the hole in the cross member so the wires do not need to make a sharp turn and get cut as they transition between the rear cross member and the bumper. The holesaw used to mount the socket was 1 3/4" (standard 7 way semi plug). The holesaw on the rear of the bumper was 1 1/2". All was deburred and the rear facing hole had to be opened up with a grinder slightly as the socket itself is not round exactly.

Making the bumper is quite easy. Make the brackets, bolt them to the rear cross member (centered in all directions in the holes). Tack weld the bumper in place level and centered. Stand back and check all measurements for fit. If it is OK, remove and weld. At first, I used the complete half sections to mount the bumper but to me it looked like it stuck out too far so I knocked them back off and cut off about another 1 1/4" off all 4 mounts.

FYI

1 3/16" bolt centers vertically for all cross member pieces

Horizontally, in order not to need to jockey with the fuel tank:

6" center to center on the left
6 1/4" center to center on the right

You know, you COULD have left it like that, then you could really get back at those idiot drivers who like to tailgate the hell outta you. Put a nice scratch all up and down their car

Bumper looks really good though. You did a great job

It does look really good! Nice work!

One question, is that plug water tight on both sides? If not, the bumper will fill up with water. My buddy just removed a home made bumper from his Scrambler and a small crack allowed it to fill about 1/2 way up with water. I was suprised at how small the crack was. If it's not water tight, you may consider drilling a small hole or two in the bottom of the bumper to allow it to drain... just a thought.
