OK... The following includes pics from the build we are doing now. We are building a vehicle for the upcoming King of the Hammers race in Feb 09. If you have not heard of the race it is a 100 mile race that includes the some of the toughest trails in the country.. the Hammers and about a 80 miles of desert racing. So... you have to have a car (racecar) that will get over the rocks fast and get it through the flats in the desert.
This is not a Jeep, but I thought the fab work might be interesting to some here on Jeep Forum. Here is what I have been working on so far.
Here are the beginnings of what will be the fabricated frame rails. We designed them in Solid Works and then laser cut the plates. It took 5 full days to tig weld them all together.
We made these stands to hold the axles on the jig table. They turned out to be real handle on the fab table to position them while welding the link mounts to the housing. They are simple to make. If you need a set let me know and we can make them for you. I can make them to your spec also. The ones pictured are for 3.5" axle tubes and are 6 inches from the table to the bottom of the axle tube.
we are now selling Light Racing dimple dies. On the table here I have up to a 4 inch. If you are in the market for some dimple dies give Jason a call at the shop. We have not had time to get them added to our website yet.
I started putting the the rear axle together a little more today. I needed to put the ends on to make sure I could get the bolts out on the lower links with the brake rotors installed. So.... a hour later and a little tig welding here we go...
The firewall on the pass side is going to look a little funny. Here is a tube that had to be bent to clear the header on that side. BTW... I will be building headers very soon. Good times... :grinpimp: The tube still allows the valve cover to be removed if needed.
I started taking a better look at the front. I am laying out the front frame rails to clear the axle at full bump which is where it is pictured here. I have to make sure the axle clears, as well as the steering, winch, and sway bar. The frame rails will also have to clear the coilover and bypass shocks in the front. Oh wait... gotta clear the tires at full bumb, full turn. I guess you can say there is a lot going on and to account for before the first tube is bent.
Here is the axle sitting at full bump in the front. Yes, the radiator is going on the back. The upper link mounts are all the way up to the water pump at bump. The pass side upper link will just clear the belt. The tubes in place are just there for mock up. They will be 1.75" solid 7075 aluminum when everything is final.
