Upgrading can be expensive. If money is an issue, just get a stick welder instead of a low quality mig. If you go mig, get one with gas and 220V if you ever may want to do 1/4". I started with a O/A torch, then got a millermatic 180, then a old school Miller dialarc 250 AC/DC tig/stick with the watercooled torch. I should be ok for a bit as far as welders go, but i still need a plasma torch.

I was looking at the Hobart 140 myself and I like their products, I did however spend more and I got the Miller 180 w/AutoSet. I have not been unhappy with it's performance. It's roughly $150 -$200 more than the Hobart 140 but well worth it. If you are stuck on a 110 machine then get the Hobart Handler 140 I am sure you won't be dissatisfied.

I have the HH140 because I dont have a 220 outlet in my garage and I wasnt going to put one in. So far the HH140 is working great. Still havent used gas with it yet.

the miller 180 with the auto set is nice I dont know much about the hobart
but the lincon 180 mig is a good little welder it will weld up to 1/2" thick
and its cheaper then the miller

I use millers at work and a lincon at home both brands weld great

you can go to home depot and pic up a lincon 180 pro mig mig welder for around $650
that one works just as well as the millers at work

I built this bumper with my lincon out of scap 3/16 steel then powder coated it at work

thats about right ...

though my SO is pretty understanding now ... when i say im too broke to go out, she asks what i bought for the jeep / shop ....

assure her size matters to you just as much as it matters to her .. and the 180 just wont get the job done!!!
