can a tailgate opening be cut from fiberglass body?
I have a 1978 with after market fiberglass tub with no tailgate. I would really appreciate the convenience of a tailgate, so I was wondering if I can cut the fiberglass, seal the cut edges, and drop in a tailgate? Maybe need to add steel supports? Has anyone done this? If so, please send me pictures or a link!

I have never owned a rig with a fiberglass body, but I would not do what you are contemplating.

IMO a fiberglass tub needs that back panel to help support the sides.

If you remove the rear section, the sides would want to bow outward and would eventually crack IMO unless you could come up with a way to add the integrity back.

Maybe I'm wrong.

there are fiberglass bodies that have the standard opening. you could probably do it but to do it right would take a lot of work. you wouldnt want to simply cut the opening and bolt on a gate. you would have to glass in the proper lip and profile and like alluded to, reenforce it.

I was imagining a (approx 10ga) steel plate bolted to the bottom lip with formed/welded side supports bolted to the wheel wells. I was planning on glassing the edge of the cutout to seal it and return some strength. Additional supports may include angle welded to the frame running along the inner wheel wells. I already have a support welded into the wheel wells connecting the frame to the roll bars, I don't think the tub really serves much structural function.

does anyone know what they do to reinforce fiberglass tubs that come with a pre-cut tailgate?

I would not tie the tub into the frame or cage with a rigid mount.

That is just asking for trouble. It will crack when the frame flexes.

I would imagine vertical supports are added internally on tubs that came with the tailgate cut out already.

The time now is 02:46 PM.
