Building an Off-Road trailer. Pintle ???S

I want to build a trailer for off-road.

What do I need to know about pintles?

It looks like you can get different sizes of rings. How do I know which to buy?

Does anyone have a close up of the tongue/ring on a homemade trailer? I am having a hard time envisioning how to build the tongue to use one of these:

Not hard to envision. The part you have pictured it what goes on the tongue end of the trailer. Mount it horizontally.
The only real bad thing with a Pintle Hook mount is that it jerks when you start going and smacks into you when you stop. Translation for what I just wrote.......... It is not as smooth as a tow ball.
If I was going to make an off-road trailer I would go with the Pintle Hook system.

www.tentrax.com makes trailer and you can get an option of both a coupler and a pintle hitch. coupler for street and pintle for trail.

I like this hitch design for the trail... from www.adventuretrailers.com

I think having a removeable hitch on the trailer end is a good idea for street and trail use.

not exactly a close up but it may help ya. It uses a removable coupler made from
3" x 1/4"wall with a 2 1/2" x 1/4" sleeve. It works well.

The lock an roll hitch last pictured works very from what I've heard, but expensive. Pintles are tried and true, probably what I'll use.
