I have the material we just need time to build it. Actually we just got a new bender for the garage and I'm going to be the Guinea pig. We have to get it done before another exo cage/ LA build from ohio takes up the bay for 2 months.

Is yours going to take similar form to the XJ tire carrier?

Mine is going to sit tight against the body.

Yes just like the XJ and the tire is tight against the gate. Well it will function the same but the bends/support bars will be different. Just to change things up. Can't have them look the same.
My corners are cut out for the hinges so when I did drop down gate I built 3/16" plates to bolt in old hinge spot. We then will build a L plate that will bolt/reinforce the inside of tub plus it will bolt under the roll cage. We build our own bushing out of urethane and bolt through the tabs on the tub.

You're smarter by keeping it close to the gate. You wont have to over build it as much. Mine is about 8 inches out (for other reasons) and it places greater strain on the hinges.

We actually welded to pipes toward gate that the tire sits on before aligning it to studs. It takes the strain off of the studs.

I have a similar plan for this...saw it on the Rokmen carrier.

Material from Barnes4wd came in yesterday. RuffStuff...stuff will be in today.

I just put mine on the stock tailgate, since it hits the bottom stock bumper pad it does not rattle or move around. I took it over 350 miles of logging roads on a trip to Idaho this summer.

^ my tailgate sags after the previous owner had a 31" tire on it. I removed than and some time later put a 30" spare tire on it (when I had 30" tires). The factory hinges simply cannot hold the weight of a larger tire. It's not an issue of if it will sag, it is when. Worst case, the hinges actually crack, or the tailgate twists, which I have seen both happen.

The later TJ's have stronger hinges, I believe yours are the aluminum ones but mine has the steel hinges, much stronger than the previous 2 versions.
