Arc Eye- Help fast please

My father was "flashed" today and his eyes are killing him now. Is there anything we can do for him besides eye droplets? Thanks

Not much you can do but sleep it off... I used to put some cool folded wash clothes on my eye's but it does not help much.

Hope he learned his lesson.

I don't have any experience with this but I would bring him to the hospital. Probably not much they can do anyway, but at least assess any damage...

yup, that's about the extent of it. cool compress and the usual OTC pain relievers. have him stay away from situations that will strain the eye, like excessively bright rooms/snow glare, or trying to read in a dim room. if the pain doesn't subside at all within 24 hours, if his vision is impared or he notices any kind of discharge from the eye, make an appointment with an eye doctor ASAP. i feel for him though. i actually got a retinal burn after spending the daysledding/tubing in the snow on a really sunny day. that night my eyes were killing me. eye protection is a must. got a spark from a grinder in one of them as well. i was under the car working on the exhaust and it somehow bounced off my chest and got around the safety glasses. had to have it removed with a needle (luckily it didn't penetrate the eye and was just stuck to the surface) and then they had to "buff" away the rust that it left behind, which is exactly what it sounds like. not fun i make sure to wear full safety goggles when grinding now.

Take ibuprofen and hyperhydrate, cold wash clothes will help comfort the eyes, but won't help them heal. If it doesn't clear up after a day or so, he'll need to see someone about it.

FYI, any ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses provide 100% UVA, UVB and IR protection. They won't protect you from the light intensity, but they do work as 'flash glasses'.

I got flash burned really good in both eyes a couple years ago while plasma cutting. Eyes almost crusted shut there was so much discharge. Only thing I could do was take Vicodin, use some eyedrops, sleep alot and stay away from bright light. Went away after about 72 hours.

Are his eyes feeling any better? Did he end up going to the hospital?

It is basically a sunburn to the eye. In most cases it feels much worse than it is damaging. Look close at the eyes and if you can see any "skin" peeling then a visit to the doctor may be warranted. If not then use a really good eyedrop like Hypotears to lube and moisturize the eyes. Cold compresses in the form of a refrigerated wet wash cloth take away a lot of the discomfort. Don't rub the eyes or apply too much pressure to the compress. Ipuprofen, a couple glasses of Scotch and bed are best. It usually goes away over night. I've had it 3-4 times. It is a bad pain and something you don't soon forget.

eye arc

one of my old teacher had always some drops in his fridge...

but he used also a cheap trick for the pain ...
lay down ...and put some fresh potatoes slices !!!! it helps !! i already tested ...
it will never replace the doctor and drops but it helps ....

Hopefully, by telling you of a mistake I made several years ago, someone may be spared the discomfort.

I was welding in a shop in nice warm weather. The work was positioned so I had to lean over and weld, like welding on a tabletop. The WHITE overhead door was directly over me. I never felt any discomfort while welding, but apparently the light was reflected off of the door and into the back of my helmet. My eyes started bothering me that night, and were very uncomfortable the following day.....................chim

It's amazing how a white surface will reflect the arc light back at you and cause burns to eyes and skin. The Miller instructional welding video I watched even cautioned to wear black tshirts if your welding jacket isn't buttoned all the wayup. It said a white tshirt could reflect it up to your neck under the helmet and burn the hell out of it.

I have a bad habit of just closing my eyes to tack.. do that all day on a cage and you end up with a nice sunburned face.
