anyone ever build their own Kayak Rack?
I dont see why it couldn't be done. I can invision taking two 2x4's and cutting them down to size, Drilling holes and finding longer bolts. If you lean your kayak on the sports bar from the jeeps back side, you can grab the yak's other end, lift it, and wriggle it onto to sports bar and winshield channel, without scratching the paint. The only thing is your sportsbar cover gets dirty when putting a wet yak on it. So just find somthing to put a little space between the windshield channel/sports bar and kayak. hint's why wouldn't 2x4s work? Then Tow strap it to fornt bumper and back tire. Was all the way up to 50 with no rack.

I have a hardtop and can't figure out a way of putting my 16+ ft. sea kayak up there yet. I just traded my Silverado for this TJ. The truck had a nice Trac-Rack system with Yakama feet. The Jeep has nothing. :-(
I don't want to bolt stuff to the top, and I'm not sure if a full expedition rack is what I want either. I need a trailer for home improvement type hauling now, and I'm thinking of somehow making a carrier that attaches to that. |

The only way that I would carry my 17 foot sea kayak on my 2002 TJ would be on a kayak trailer. Im not sure that any other way would be legal, safe, or appropriate for the kayak. I guess it will depend upon how long your kayak is, what it is made of (how much support it needs with temperatures), and the laws of your state.

Simple, add a removable front bar on the front bumper like a pipe rack truck, you don't need heavy metal, the kayak will hold the pipe rigid
Look at a plumbing truck
