ammo case idea

So heres my idea. I like the way a lot of guys have ammo cases on their wheel wells. But i don't like how they go above the tub so a duster wont fit. My idea is taking two large ammo boxes and removing the bottoms so they sit flush on the wheel well, but don't go above the tub. Tack weld them in place so they can be removed later, but wont fall off.
Now my questions are: Are there any particular sizes that would work well? If there are boxes that open along the long side of the box, not the short end? Or if there are any other types of Boxes that would work well with this Idea?
If possible I want to try getting the box to stretch from the rear roll bar to the main column.
And because everyone has to have a reason on this site. I'm not putting a box in the back because i need room for my dog, and hes going to be a big boy. I also every once in a while want to be able to carry passengers. I want to be able to let the dog in through the tail gate so no rear lock box. And i really need lockable storage for my work camera and tools. I want to take my thule box off the top so i can actually fit into garages again.
ok sorry for the long wind. hope someone has ideas. thanks

What about just cutting off the bottom, trimming it and welding it back in place to keep the box "watertight"?

Screw the fixed size ammo cases, buy a pair of Mastercraft Cordura bags ($30 each). They come with footman loops and nice straps to secure them to the fender wells, they clear a tonneau fine, and are flexable duffle type bags for easier fitting of your stuff. I tried fixed size steel boxes and these bags are WAY more flexible and easy. I'm through looking for a solution, found the best, for me anyway.

I've looked at those bags but i need something with lockable storage. I have about 3,000 invested in my work camera and it has to be locked up, so thats why i am going with the ammo boxes.
The reason I can't put the bottom back on is because i have a TJ now, so the box has to be contoured to the sloping wheel well. I had boxes on my old Yj that fit perfect but the TJ just isn't that easy to do.
Now i wish I had the measurements. But im at school right now, dreaming up cheap mods I can do while I am home over winter break.

One of the only cans I can think of, off the top of my head, that opens along the long side is the 3 round 81mm mortar cartridge box. 25 1/2"Lx13 1/2"Dx7 1/2"T Hope this helps.
