Air Compressor style....

Looking to maybe get an AC for father's day if the price is right....most likely one of the Sears 33gal models. Don't need very heavy duty for lots of power tools, mainly interested in one for when I do a durabak job on my tub (and maybe if that goes well, possibly paint the exterior as well).

Does one style (vertical vs horizontal) have any advantage over the other?
- Vertical obviously has a smaller footprint
- Horizontal, probably easier to move around

Anything I'm missing?

i've got the horz model and the only complaint i have is that it cycles on a lot with continuous draw tools and takes about 5 min to charge from 120 to 150 psi. at least at 90 psi. haven't tried painting with it yet, but i did dismantle a 20 foot block chimney with the air hammer. worked nicely and i don't know how i got along without air tools for so long

Sounds like it'll do me for what I need....should work fine for spraying undercoating in the tub and whatever light air tool use I have.

Was reading up on painting the exterior...don't think I'm gonna tackle that. Don't really have the facilities for it and I doubt I could create a decent enough "paint booth" out of EZ-Up tents and tarps.

Hey Jim,

You may want to consider other future uses. I bought a little oilless model about 5 years ago and what I found was that it was extremely noisy and it didn't end up being enough for the new things I wanted to do with it.

If you truly only have the two projects you mentioned, you may want to rent one instead?

Pretty soon you'll find out all the cool things you can do with an air compressor like sand blast and run that new sander on your tub only to find that your air compressor won't keep up and it's giving you a headache.

I recently bought an 80 gallon upright two stage oiled compressor. This thing will do anything I need it to do...with less noise. I think you can make the jump to this type of compressor for around $550.

Just thought I'd drop in and be the guy on your other shoulder with the pointy horns coming out of his head to try to steer you in another direction.

Hmmm....thanks for the info. The one I was looking at was gonn come in around $300. I should be getting a retroactive raise fairly soon (in the next month or so) so I could probably afford $500-600.

What's the maker and model? The guy who welded in my driver's side floorboard last weekend told me to avoid oil-less compressors. Said they don't last.

For the typical home owner, there is nothing wrong with the Home Depot or Lowes brand. I actually think it's beneficial because they cater to you like they do all of their products. I had mine delivered for a very cheap price and they brought it right up to my garage. That was important for me as these things are heavy.

HD has a Husky Model CL7006016 that is probably the lowest price you'll find for a oiled AC.

Look around and compare numbers like HP, cfm @ psi, and warranty. I have literally beat mine up over the last year and it still like new. If you've ever run an air grinder you know how quickly those things use up air. Mine has never been low on air for that type of tool. Fairly quiet too. But bottom line is to shop around and find the deal that's right for you.

Ah! That number looked familiar...have been searching around on the net and found a Coleman Powermate with......same model #. Looks like Husky is rebranded Coleman? Home Depot's website has it listed for $429 (not counting shipping). Wonder what the in-store price is.

Check this out... (know anything bout this brand)

Campbell Hausfeld 60-Gallon (Belt Drive) Air Compressor
$580 (no tax, free shipping)

Cast Iron Twin Cylinder Pump
Up to 5,000 hours of life (Based on B-10 Bearing Rating)
MODEL NUMBER VT6275
HP PEAK 7.0
VOLTAGE/FREQUENCY 240 Volts
SCFM @ 40/90 PSI 11.8 / 10.3
MAXIMUM PRESSURE 135 PSI
DIMENSIONS 27.5" x 30" x 71"
WEIGHT 254 lbs.
LIMITED WARRANTY 3 Years

Only problem for me is that it's 240V...unless I mount it close to my house and have an air hose about 100ft long. No garage...

My bad on the name. Mine is a Husky and the one I gave you is a Coleman.

I think most of the oiled type will be 240v. Pretty easy to drop a 240 breaker in your panel though. Not sure what your conditions are, but it was an easy setup for me.

You know, a lot of people keep their compressor outside if they're in a climate that can handle it. Less noisy inside, but your neighbors may get tired of it. You could build an enclosure around it...keep it dry and less noisy. But I digress.

My shed is a good 25 yds away from the house (which I rent). Any setup I do will be temporary. Easy enough for me to run a cord through the basement window and plug the compressor in the dryer outlet when I need it.

yeah, could do that....in the winter when I'd probalby not need it much, I'd most likely put it in the shed.

I bought one from Sears (Craftsman). I was a 6 HP with a 30 gal tank Verticle style. It came with some basic air tools which won't really last, but it was only $299. It has done everything from chipping up tile floors, to running my pneumatic floor jack. Overall I am very pleased with it.

I bought the 33 gal Craftsman vertical compressor and love it. Like was said I dont know how I survived without one for all these years. I could use some better quality airtools, but for now the cheaper ones that came with my compressor are working ok. I dont know why people would complain about craftsman compressors, but in my experiances with mine I dont have a songle complaint. Except that the wireing in my garage sucks so I keep blowing circuts, buts thats not the compressors fault, its the AirForces

I bought the same one. I hate it and would love to get rid of it. It is extremely noisy and doesn't have the CFM that I need. I will never buy another one again. Hopefully I can buy an IR when I finally get a house of my own. I am not going through the expense of running another 220 Volt line to the garage in a house I don't own. I just bought the materials to run one for the welder. ($120 in wire and $20 in receptacle and breaker)
