air compressor pumps

So the air compressor pump on my air compressor just died. I have been looking at different pumps to replace it with. My question is, what is the downside (or is there one) of using a pump manufactured for a 5hp motor on my 3hp motor? vice versa?

Also I am looking into plasma cutters soon... what kind of filter, water/oil separater, etc do I need to look into and where can I find a good filter rated for 120psi?

Thanks ahead of time.

I would imagine the 5hp pump is slightly bigger and therefore requires a little more power. Might work the 3hp motor too hard?

I agree with BESRK that this isn't a good idea but my reasoning is this; powering a 5hp pump with a 3hp motor will not give you the output that's listed for the 5hp pump - and I'm not entirely sure it will even give you what you have now because you're underpowering a larger pump.

Best to buy the filter at the same time as you buy the plasma cutter. Most manufactures recomend their own, ask your sales person. Get a good one because if any moisture gets into the machine, your warranty is void.

I'm buying myself a Hypertherm 45 for Christmas and springing $130. extra for their filter.

Run an inline desicant filter directly at the intake of the plasma cutter, you can buy some that can be taken apart and dried in the oven or you can buy the cheap ones and swap them out when the little balls change colors.
