Advise Trimming Rear fender Tub

Okay Im doing a LCOG setup and Im going to run 35's and want to cut the existing rear fender flare holes in the tub so I need to cut about 2". I currently have the stock rear flares on now which I will draw an outline on top of the stock flares with wax pencil, then remove stock flares and cut. I want to know what would be the best and cleanest cut tool I would use to make a perfect clean cut on my rear tub.

I used plasma and a drum sander when I cut mine.

I used a saber/jig saw with mine, put tape where you are going to cut to keep from chipping the paint/body filler (factory new jeeps have had lots of body filler on them in random places).

I hope you check out where the welds that hold the fender well to the tub are before you start cutting. From what I remember when I trimmed mine, the spot welds weren't all that far away from the top of the wheel opening and 2" would have easily blown through a few of them.

When I did mine I found how high the seam I could go and stretched the rear about 3 inches. I stretched the wheelbase # 5 inches. I reused my stock flares and I pulled them to fit the opening. I don't think that you can do the with the hard OEM ones of the later years. The TJ/LJ you won't have ability to stretch as easily as I did, but you will have to get enough cut and bump stopped properly to keep the tires out of the sheet metal. You will loose up travel, but you will gain the ability to sidehill and cross obstacles that would roll you over otherwise, as a buddy of mine found out following me across a rock face.

I usually use a plasma cutter and leave enough material to clean up with a flap disk.

I've also had good results with an angle grinder and cutoff disk. Same procedure.. cut a little fat, and clean up with a flap disk.

Don't forget your charcoal canister is in the right rear of the tub inside the wheel well. Unless you relocate that annoying piece of junk it will limit how much you can cut.

I have a little body saw. It's really quiet and zips through sheet metal like butter.

You can cut up higher u will just have to weld the two parts back together,remember to prim and paint when our done so it don't rust,like my whole jeep has done,(still making floor patch panels)
