The engine in my 2001 TJ is knocking. I was considering buying a wrecked XJ for the 4.0 engine. But Id also like to have HP30 out of it and the AW4 tranny.

Anyone know of a reason that couldn't use the 4.0L out of an XJ? Or any particular years I need to look for?

For the HP30, I need a 92-98 model.
Not sure on the engine or tranny, but I'm reading up on it...

The 00 to 01 will work. Why not put a v8 in? I did mine for right at 2200 used a 5.9 magnum more power and better fuel econ im getting 18 cty an 23 highway with 35s and 456 gears

I am considering using a 5.3 LS style engine with a 4L60E tranny. I'm pretty familiar with the GM drive train. Do you have a write up on your 5.9?

No but i got to keep factory gauges no check engine light and kept my 5speed

You sure? The top end is the same, but the blocks are different. TJs had two different blocks, 97-99/00-06, XJs used the same block 96-01, but used two different heads, 96-99/00-01.

It would work, but it's not a bolt in ordeal. WJ engine swap would be more direct.

thx... that's what I was looking for. I was hoping I could use the same short block. GM has spoiled me with the V8 stuff all being interchangeable. My 4.0L engine sounds like a diesel its knocking so loud.

As much as I'd love to do a V8 swap, time is a big factor. I was looking for a quick fix for the 4.0L engine and then have the option of using the HP30 and AW4 later on. But I don't think it's going to be that easy.

I'll keep digging, but it's looking like I need to scrap that idea.

I sold my 03 4.0l to a 01 wj also installed fit perfectly only why not get a long block from orielly auto parts 3 year warranty unlimited miles pretty good deal?
