Cast steel, not cast iron. Just make sure you preheat and let cool slowly. Sam with knuckles and inner Cs. I have my trackbar mount welded to my inner C.

Here is a friend's work. I'm not sure I'll ever use heims for steering, but I'm just showing the welding.

He machined a sleeve to take out the taper, then ground it flat:
