Chevy TBI swap on my 258

Hello all. I'm a long time browser, but a short time member and first time poster. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

I'm tired of constantly tuning my holley 390cfm 8007 and it still runs super rich. For simplicity and budget reasons, I have decided that a TBI from a 4.3L is the route I will try. I always hear of bustedjeep.com as being the absolute best article on this swap; however, every link I try does not work. Does anyone have this article and would be willing to share it?

From my nightmare experience with swapping a TPI on my corvette, I'm thinking I want to get a complete doner car this time. I have an angle on a $500 blazer that runs good. If I can be convinced it is not necessary, maybe I will try to piece it together though. Budget is top priority.

Anybody have the bustedjeep article?

Haven't any info on the specific article in question but in all honesty a donor is cheaper than pieces ten times over. Example I sold a harness recently for 150 so that's a good chunk of the budget. A full donor for 500 if it runs is the ticket. Mounting isn't too bad. But piecing will drag it out longer also. Can you readily find these parts locally? I'd just rather have the whole package for one price.

GM TBI is quite simple. You can get all you need and a whole lot more by just reading the FAQs ( 3rd line down says start here) http://www.binderplanet.com/forums/f...splay.php?f=75

I spent about 200.00 bucks one the one I built with timming control then decided I wanted to go Mopar mpfi so I never ran my Tbi set up.

Cj JY TBI is a great way to go, if you're up to it....

83,
Binderplanet's injection tech forum has a wealth of information. BillUSN-1, who is the moderator has forgotten more about the tbi swaps that I will ever know. All of my system came from an Astro van. Lots of them in the salvage yards. You will probably want to buy the software and hardware to do your own EEPROM programming. Even with my boo-boos and having to replace a couple parts, I ended up with real good system that controls both fuel and spark for less than half of the Howell system price. Howell only controls fuel.
Now for the caveat: If disassembling a wiring harness, soldering, and reading a pin out schematic is too daunting for you, as well as testing voltages in the .5 to 5 volt range to confirm operation, Junkyard TBI may not be the right project for you to take on. It will take more than a weekend to do. I took 6 months, but I had to pass AZ emissions. (whole 'nuther story) However, even when I was tweaking the fuel and the spark maps for the best performance, my 258 ran better, idled smoother than I could ever obtain from a carburetor. God bless.

Yes emissions. One hurdle at a time. That's my next project. From what I've gathered the engine being placed in the vehicle needs to be a year newer than original and have all the factory emissions equipment for that engine to pass inspection. Seems Jon could fill us both in on the full scoop there.

My experience was frustrating to be sure... I was able to pass the sniffer test with the TBI installed, but not the visual. Now keep in mind that I still had the cat, O2 sensor, and sensors needed by the TBI to operate. I had removed the upstream and downstream air injection pipes, vacuum tubing, solenoids and the other associated parts that were not needed or not operational. However in the eyes of the state of Arizona, It it was there in 1983, it needs to be there now. Luckily It was all in two 5 gallon buckets in the garage. Re-installed the pulse air system, inter weaved the inoperative wires into the TBI harness and ran it through one more time. Passed and been driving it since last August legally.
Moon cruiser, who frequents the CJ Forum got collectors insurance on his CJ. Signed an affidavit that this was not a drive to work vehicle and was able to be exempt of emissions testing in Pima County. You might PM him as to the procedure. Last and not least only Pima and Maricopa counties require emission testing, move to Flagstaff . God bless.

Well my 89 tbi had no air pump from factory(which I thought was odd). And I plan on running all the associated emissions hardware as it was intended. Will have high flowing cat and pretty open exhaust. Very mild cam(lt1). Hoping nobody here is any wiser. A customer of our shop has an 88xj all convert to obd2 98xj, the entire thing you can't tell except the square tail light.

Did your '89 have the CEC type emission control? That is what came on my '83 from the factory. No air pump, but a system that "pulsed" air into the exhaust system either upstream or downstream of the catalytic converter. This is accomplished by the O2 sensor voltages. Kind of a Rube Goldberg way to accomplish emission control. But we were using Commodore 64 computers back then... God bless.
