Chevy 350 alt wiring

ive searched all over the net and i hoping you guys can help me out. i swapped a chevy 355 into my yj. i believe its out of 90's pick up but im not exactly sure. its a one piece rear main seal, i do know that. the engine runs great and sounds amazing, drives great but i dont think its charging. i dont have a volt meter yet because im gradually buying all auto meters. i can run it for a while but when i start it up after its like ''r r r vroom''.but with a full charge it fires right up. im very handy with a multi meter and the jeep has a hei distributer so the coil it built in. i believe its hooked up correctly but it has a 4 wire plug that goes to nothing, i originally thought it went to the voltmeter gauge. but i think its probably something to do with the charging. any thoughts or input would be great. mabe my alt is junk i dont really know.

Hei distributer is one keyed power, and optional tach. The other 3 wire plug I believe, it comes from the internal ignition module and plugs into the cap as well, but it won't run if that's the plug your talking about. As far as alt gm has been on the one wire system forever so you hook the one smaller wire in the 2 wire plug to a keyed power to energize the alt, and the other heavier one you just cut off and put a lug on it to put it with the output charging line to the battery.

So I'm sure your charging so you should check connections, then check timing as it may be too far advanced, then your left with exhaust too close to a week starter. Good luck.

I guess I didnt make it as clear as I shoul about the dissy. It's wired to the key as you sated. My question is about the 4 wire plug on the alt. I think it's labeled plfs. Does this news hooked up to something for proper operation?

I figured it out. The alt that was on the motor was regulated by the original Chevy computer. I was unable to install a secondary reg so I bought a single post alt that required no regulator. Installed it. Made a mount bracket for the top and it works like a champ. Thanks for your help!
