Hey guys, here's another one of us 4bangers out here wanting more power.
The guy next door is a back yard mechanic, he's done a few swaps, recently a 2002 s10 sitting on military's and 50" tractor tires. Lol

I'm trying to go cost effective and bullet proof. This is my daily driver, so I want to make this conversion as simple as it gets.
My theory was a carb'ed 350 with a turbo 400 on stock transfer case.
The jeep is currently a auto, I would rather have a manual, but I was thinking it would fall together better with a auto. Not concerned about smog.

Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated. Links are helpful, I'm not making a beast, a stock 350 with 200 to 250 hp will do me great!

5.3 vortec. Fuel injected, reliable. Get one with a 4l60e already bolted on. Novak conversions is a one stop shop for parts

a carb'ed 350 is your best bet. parts are cheap and plentiful, being carb'ed it will be easy to work on, no computer means no trying to figure out why it wont start for hours and hours. sbc 350, edelbrock 600 carb and a HEI, good to go.

If you plan to do any off-road driving or wheeling a carb is absolutely the worst thing you can have, any time your not mostly on level ground it won't stay running, you will constantly stall, and stall and stall and no one will want to wheel with you. Ask anyone who has wheeled with a samurai or older full size with a carb, unless you want to convert to propane, a carb will kill your off road ability.

unless you know what to do to the carb. cant post any pictures and dont know why but my old 55 willys is 98% used for extreme off roading, rock crawling and ive run nothing but a carb. what i did was to install a regulator inline T off. which means that my fuel line comes off the fuel pump then T,s, one line goes to a natural gas on/off valve and the other line to a regulator, which is set at 1 1/2 psi, when i go four wheeling i simply turn the gas valve to off which forces the fuel through the regulator, that lowers the psi which lowers the float level, i did this on my sbbc 350 with a 600 edelbrock but also have done it on a couple jeeps with 304,s a autolite 2 barrel carbs, it works perfect, no flooding at all and the funny thing is you can forget to turn the valve back on to get full psi and get back on the highway doing 60 mph without any problems at all. ive been running this setup for almost 20 years and no problems at, never flooded and no gas leaks. i was gong to do the tbi fuel injection but this has worked so good that i cant justify the expensive for something i dont need. if i could post a picture of the T, setup with the regulator and valve i would but cant.

Hotrod351 GREAT idea. Myself a Scout with a 350, Turbo 400 and Quadrajet worked extra good until it almost rolls over.

So hotrod is agreeing that a carb is not the best for off-road, else he wouldn't have to dork with it to make it better.

FI is easy to maintain and works best. Oh, to the OP, I did a 4.3V6 and don't regret it at all, plenty of power compared to the 2.5L I also had.

dream on with that thought JeeperDon. im saying, well exactly what i did say. with a simple modification the carb will work perfect. and unlike fuel injection you wont be left stranded while you try to figure out why your jeep just quit or wont re-start. i also have a cheap electric fuel pump on the frame by the stock fuel pump, mech fuel pump goes out and in about 5 minutes i can connect my electric and back on the road. believe me id love to justify buying the big fuel injection setup the cameros have and have it chromed up but dont need it. think what i did cost under $75.00, valve, regulator and gauge plus hoses and T fitting. again = hey my jeep wont start, ok let me go and get my code reader and run the codes. most carbs you can pull off the top and check, and or, fix any problem in them enough to get you home. not with fuel injection. ive seen to many jeeps towed back to there trailers.

and that was the problem i was having rjbruzan. in really steep inclines or leaned way over it would load up and flood. put the regulator on it and have never had any problem and its been on there for about 15 years. pm me and ill send you a picture of the setup i have, its really simple to do.

I'm impressed by the inline T, that's a damn good idea!
I'm not extreme rock crawling with my rig, as stated above, it's a dd. my first vehicle had a 351 with a 4 barrel, I love the simplicity, and I think I could make it pretty reliable. Saving allot of time and probably money not dealing with FI and some kind of ecu mod seems like enough reason to go with the classic.

it simple and it works. cant remember how many time i forgot to turn the valve back to the main line and got out on the highway doing 60 mph without any problems at all.

Though I had only one indecent with my xj carbed 2.5 when I looked for an engine efi was the true upgrade. Granted tbi is only a churched up carb, but it works!

I'm with JeeperDon, the Vortec V6 was a really easy swap. The stand alone wiring harness made it a really easy swap. Very strong motor, and in my opinion all the power you'll ever need with the right gearing. And, the gas mileage is that bad either.

I have a SBC with carb in my 84 CJ. Been in there since 1992. I do prefer the Edlebrock over the Holly.

I was having loading up issues with the Holly carb, the Edlebrock seems to be better.

I would like to see your in line T setup.
