5.2 Swap question - Is tranny a separate harness?

I'm getting my parts together to do a 4.0 / 5.2 swap. My donor engine didn't come with a harness or ECM so I'm on the hunt. I haven't been able to determine definitively if there is a separate harness that goes to the transmission or if it's one big harness (engine & tranny). Can someone give me the skinny on this? Looked through most of the swap threads everywhere and some parts diagrams online but just can't find the answer.

While I'm asking, is there any difference in ECM from a 4x4 vs 4x2 donor (finding more/cheaper options if include 4x2..) ?

Just want to make sure I make as few trips to the wrecking yards as possible..

Thanks!

To answer just a few of your questions. Yes the engine transmission share the harness and they get their inputs from the ecm.
It shouldn't matter on the ecm whether it's a 4x4 or not i did the 5.2 swap and my ecm is from a 2 wheel drive auto truck and my harness is from a grand Cherokee.

Thanks for the input it really helped. Managed to find a 2000 5.2 computer and harness today in great shape for two bills. Got my 2001 5.2 and tranny for 400. Gonna fire the 135k donor motor this weekend on the stand to verify.. Off and running!

Are you looking to run the dodge auto trans? Did you get the transfer case?

There's a good transmission relay wiring write-up from Jason's build:

The 5.2 uses the 44RE and the 5.9 uses the 46RE, but the wiring for the two are equivalent. You will need to add a relay and fuse for the transmission. I hijacked the relay spot in my fuse block for the rear window, since I will only be using a soft top.

I used the donor (99 Durango in my case) harness and spliced the C105 and C106 plugs in to my TJ's C103 and C104 connectors. That way the transmission stuff was already wired, injectors are wired, and they are almost 1 to 1. I had to make a few splices for the relay and fuel pump, but it turned out nicely.

What vehicle is your donor harness from? I'd be happy to share my notes with you if it's from a Durango.

If it's a 4x4 computer it will change the shift points when it detects 4lo, but thats about it.

The 46re should really have been behind the 5.2, the first gen ZJ got the hydraulic version behind the 5.2 and then they switched to the 44re.
