Stokes is a 16,000 acre state forest located about 60 miles northwest of where you are:

Sparta is a solid 30 minutes away from Stokes-coming from Belleville you would pass Sparta on Route 15 and drive for another half hour at least before hitting the main gate at Stokes. Google and the search function on this site are your friends. Stokes, the Delaware Water Gap, High Point, and Bear Swamp, Flatbrook-Roy, and Walpack WMA combined (they're basically all connected) totals about 85,000 acres-plenty of trails to be found.

Not to revive an old thread but where are you guys finding all these trails in Sparta? 19 Years and I haven't heard of much other then the dirt trails near the Edison mines or the power lines which is risk knowing personally a couple cops.

I think it's a geography error-somebody said before that Stokes is "near Sparta"-it's not. Sparta is the suburban soccer mom capital of Sussex County and there's hardly any public land there. Powerline ROWs are almost always off limits because they are usually easements over private land. If they cross public land (like in the case of a State Forest or WMA) and there's an established, ungated road, that's an exception, but many times they gate them anyway, because the utility companies don't want people rutting up their access roads.

Not til the first snowfall-considering it's 80 degrees right now I'd say there's still time. I'm probably heading up there this weekend for the first time in a while. It will be interesting to see what roads are closed into the Gap because of the government shutdown.
