I'll be working on my Jeep all day tomorrow. Gotta tackle a lot of stuff I didn't during the winter.

Left some tools at my dad so got sidetracked. Will be done in an hour then it's about an hour ride for me. Wanna shoot for about 1? Ranger station?

There are two ranges up in Flat brook. One is shotgun/trap with an archery range. The other is a muzzle loader and .22 range. The only requirement is someone in your group has to have taken the hunter safety course. The ranges are part of the NJ hunter practice areas. I have never seen a ranger checking but those are the rules. You can Google it to find more information and exact location from the official website. The gunshots could also be coming from anywhere since there is a lot of hunting that takes place in the area.

I have not been to Stokes yet this year, but does anyone know if the road to Crater Lake is open? I know it's not technically in Stokes.

You also have to have a valid hunting license on your person. The rule is that the range is open to "licensed hunters and their guests," so you could have a group of five or six people with you as long as you one of you has a valid 2013 hunting license. Any gunshots this time of year are either coming from the range or from shooting on private property-hunting season closed in that zone in mid-February and turkey doesn't start until around the end of April.

No. All state ranges are .17/.22 rimfire rifle and muzzleloader/shotgun (you can shoot slugs at some of them) only:

http://www.nj.gov/dep/fgw/ranges.htm

Handguns of any type are specifically prohibited.

The gate at the Blue Mountain Lake parking lot is probably open, but the road is likely still closed where it turns to gravel/dirt. Skyline Drive was badly washed out during Hurricane Irene (yes, Irene, not Sandy-it's been THAT long) and the Park Service STILL has not fixed the road. Rumor has it that they are using this as a backdoor way to stop vehicular traffic at Blue Mountain Lake. From what I've heard large concrete barriers have been placed across the road and it is completely impassable. If it never ends up opening this Summer we might end up parking at Blue Mountain Lake and hiking to Hemlock Pond to swim.
