M715 repower

This is my first post here, and hoping that somebody can steer me in the right direction. I live in Portland, ME, and am looking for somebody/shop that can put a new engine, transmission, and transfer case into my M715.

The truck runs and drives fine now, but I want to travel safely at highway speeds, and add power steering and brakes. My thought was to have a 4.7l stroker built up for it. That way it'd maintain its inline 6 heritage. An NV4500 behind it would be awesome, but I'm open to ideas. As for the transfer case, a Dana 300 would probably be fine. The current NP200 is very loud, and heats up quick around 50 mph.

Haveing experince with your model of kaiser I would foucs on upgradeing the brakes. The corvette master cylinder is a great up grade. Then you can stop. Change the front dana 60 to self locking hubs. This will help transfer case issuses. Some of the speed problems is there because of the 5:87:1 gears in the axle. More power in the engine will allow you to go faster but it is going to genarate heat. The 230 engine you have is a good power plant in my opinion. You can add power steering to it. It also gets decent mpgs. [I] have seen many of this trucks with everything from 6.2 litter disels to 4.3 litter engines in them. It is very experisive to do the swaps and get all the bugs worked out. You may also want to consider that a fully restore m715 sells for 7500-10000$. I have not see any sell for more with a drive train swap. If you still want the swap to happen find a j20. It was built from the m715. just alot less heavy duty. I have seen alot of these trucks setting in yards up here. Thats just my two cents

Thanks for the response. The brakes are definitely on the list of getting upgraded. They do fine for now, but a dual master cylinder will add to the safety factor greatly. After some time will this behemoth, I've been refining my list of upgrades. Brakes are number one closely followed by wheels. I want to lose the split rings, and have the ability to run tubeless. I'm not sure if I will be having custom wheels built for the stock axles or getting different axles completely. There are a lot of benefits that go with different axles. I'm not really concerned with the resale value. I got mine at a good price, and if I was to restore it (to mil spec) it'd cost way more than what I could sell it for. It has already been modified by a fire department so I'd rather just add enhancements to it to make it more useful to me. I have located a shop in town, and plan on speaking to them more in depth about future possibilities with the truck.

the bove website should help you out. they are out of utah and do some pretty cool things. ie wheels/tires
i'm sure they could help you in the conversion process tech support
