Im new to off roading in north east MA also, and id like to know where these legal spots are that are an hour away. as far as i know from my research the only options are cape cod dunes, and western ma (which is super ambiguous). any info on spots would be much appreciated.

As suggested, check out the clubs that are part of the NEA and start firing off some emails to them. You should be able try some outings as a guest and get a feel for which club you might want to go out with more regularly. Some are more extreme than others.
