@ Everyone else, please don't post the location of this trail in public forum. There have been lots of problems out there and the towns have been wanting to shut it down for years now. We are trying to work with them to keep it open. The last thing we need is MORE yahoos reading about it on the internet and going and destroying it even more.

I'm from Weare (just under an hour from Fremont) but I wheel all over the state and do volunteer work and work with the towns to try to preserve the roads & trails we do have access to, because it seems like we're losing more every day.

Matt when u classify that trail we spoke of as a class 6.....how difficult would u say it is? I own a stock 97 GC and don't have much offroading experience nor do I have anyone to back me up on the trails if I get stuck.....would this be something I could make it thru without help or experience?

never go 4wheeling alone with one Jeep. join a club or go out with a friend
so there are 2 Jeeps. There are plenty of clubs out there pick the right one for you.

I go wheeling alone all the time. But I go out prepared, don't do anything dumb, know most of southern NH like the back of my hand and have plenty of people I can call if need-be.

Class 6 is just the legal classification that describes the type of highway. Class 6 is any town road that has had maintenance discontinued by a Selectmen vote, or hasn't been maintained in five or more years. It doesn't say anything about the difficulty. I'd say 80% of Class 6 roads in NH can be done in a stock vehicle by an experienced driver. I've also seen some that you would need to trailer a buggy to, in order to make it through.

As far as the Fremont one goes, you can do it in a stock vehicle from the Fremont end, headed toward Raymond. BUT on the Raymond end there are some very deep puddles and you have to know how to navigate through them. Some parts have solid bottoms, some are solid with deep ruts, some are just muck. You CAN avoid it though. Heading from Fremont toward Raymond, when you're most of the way through, you'll come to an obvious fork in the road. The one to the right is also a class 6 road (so its legal) and it bypasses all of those puddles on the main trail, and puts you out just down the street from where "straight" would've taken you.

I'm from rochester. Not sure of all these trails and wheeling spots people are speaking of farmington a town over has a sand pit. Bout all I've seen for places to go since boulders are always in front of trails

A sand pit would be private property - illegal to wheel unless you have landowner permission.

There are all kinds of Class 6 roads in Farmington, Barrington, Strafford, etc. A good place to get started is to pick up a DeLorme Gazeteer at a book store or sporting goods store. I believe they're around $20. Not everything it shows is legal (class 6) but it's a good starting point. Some towns will put signs at the entrance to all the class 6 roads but not all. Another good indicator is that they'll have stone walls on either side. Again, not true 100% of the time, but it's a general rule to make a fairly safe assumption.
