Down South Offroad is a lot of fun. It's mostly an ATV park but you can bring in a truck or Jeep as well. It boarders the San Jacinto river so the beach area is full of action. During the peak times (concert days and Saturday, late afternoon-evening), the beach isn't too kid-friendly.

There are some areas along the river away from the crowded beach area that are good for camping.

Be sure to check the calendar on their website before you go because if there's a concert that day, the prices go way up. It's always cash only to get into the park.

Here are a few assorted pics from this spring:

Here's the news story:

http://blog.chron.com/newswatch/2012...o-people-dead/

I think half the people at DSO are drunk at any given time there. It's definitely not the safest place, that's for sure. For what it's worth, everyone entering the park is supposed to sign this pretty lengthy liability waiver. It will be intersting to see if that holds up if there is a lawsuit.

DSO does take some measures to give the place a veneer of security: The have a security guard or two, the staff seem to have radios, and there is a patrol ATV. They prohibit handguns but I really doubt that 100% of the vehicles there are gun-free.

But, for a 700 acre park, those security measures seem like they'd run thin in an emergency. ATVs, trucks, drinking and lots of activity don't make for a safe atamosphere. Buyer beware. No amount of guards and radios is going to prevent ATV rollovers and injuries, drinking or no drinking.

What really drove home the safety issue for me was when I saw two young teenage girls whizzing by at high speed on a 4 wheeler with the passenger texting and the driver holding a cell phone in one hand and the other hand on the throttle. That, combined with all of the other activity in the park on a busy day, seemed like an accident waiting to happen.

I hope these deaths don't force a shutdown of the place. It's a private business and a fun place. Yes there's a risk to riding there, but hopefully it won't force them to close. I fear it may end up being a battle of who can get the best lawyer, unfortunately.

Looks like a nice place:

http://creeksideedge.com/

Anyone ever been primitive camping there? We did primitive camping at Down South Offroad but it can be somewhat noisy with all of the ATVs driving around night. I would assume Creekside is the same way...
