i know its a little bit of a drive for you but there's a metal yard in kc, mo that apparently is priced pretty reasonably. not sure of the name i was told about it by the guy who gave me the 32s i'm on. he's in the process of building a buggy. and i've been wanting to do this too, now that i have a full size spare i'd really like to have a tire carrier

Take 254 South to 135 South get off on the 21st street exit and go West. I think you'll go less than a mile and on the South side of the street you'll see what appears to be a scrap yard (I don't recall the name of the place). They sell new and scrap metal. Every time I've been there they let me look through their scrap to see if there is anything I can use. Then I buy whatever else I need new. Their prices have always been very reasonable. Most of the metal you've seen at my house came from there and I spent less than $200 for it. That includes all the stock I used to make my roof rack.

You may be able to find some of the metal you need cheaper on-line but, overall, you won't find a better, more convenient place within reasonable driving distance to here.

Yes, pics are in order but, I'm currently working from my better half's work lap top so no pics for a while. Plus, I haven't really finished the tire carrier yet. I still want to add mounts for a Hi-Lift and fuel can(s).

I promise to take pics and post them once I get my computer up and running again.

is it a hitch mounted carrier? i came across this thread and wouldnt mind doing one like this. although a simple hitch mount would be a easier way to go.

EDIT: forgot the link lol

It's actually quite similar except that I made a new receiver that mounts between my stock bumper and the body which gives me a lot more ground clearance in the rear and a much steeper departure angle as well. My hitch now goes through the center of my stock rear bumper.

It's kind of hard to explain but you'll understand once I get the pics up.

By the way, whoever built the carrier in that link did a kick @ss job!

thats cool. maybe i could somewhat do the same thing you did. yet retain my stock hitch and just weld one off center to mount the tire carrier off of. since i dont want mine centered. and yeah thats the best one i've seen yet. on mine behind the bumper cover theres a stamped steel support. i could easily plate that on both sides with a square hole cut out for the hitch. hmmm.... you've got me thinking here lol. or maybe i could make a "hitch" on both left and right side of the bumper and distribute the weight and possibly make it a swing away? gah too many ideas haha

Hahaha, too many ideas is right. I went through the same thing. It seems every idea spawns several more ideas. Better watch out, it will consume you! Hahaha.

lateralus3 and I both live in El Dorado but, my in-laws live in Andover so, I'm there quite often. I drive an ever evolving, white '99 XJ on 33x12.5 BFG KM2's.

I also spend an inordinate amount of time at Lowes on East Kellog although I'm usually driving my truck when I go there.
