The trick to front axle u-joint survival is:

Do not bind them up.
Don't turn the steering wheel all the way to its stops while on the gas pedal. Do not go backwards with the wheel turned full(a u-joint breaker for sure).
Binding up the front end(steering to its stops) is very hard on the front u-joints.

I always turn off the front locker(if on) BEFORE I go backwards even an inch.
If you have a front auto-locker...CARRY U-JOINTS! (almost impossible to go backwards while turning, with the locker engaged and not bind up the inside axle)

Same here. It was really just an open diff and wet rock combo that hindered my getting over it. Oh and I was too chicken to take the far right line.. and I think I could have made it up there, just didnt want to chance going over the edge.

Im not very exp but I think if you can do what I can do you should be ok..

How did you end up doing at the quarry?

I would say that the 2 trails are close to the same in difficulty.
Twin cone has a spot or 2 that can be a bit tough, but there are a couple of lines through it.

Not the best almost got up the bottom part, dam carb. All in all it was a blast most I've done with it since I worked out all the kinks. But I have decided to order a 2.5 in lift for it and hopefully a locker

I don't have any lockers as of yet. hopefully I will have a rear locker by the end of the year. Do you guys think I will be alright in an open/open rig on 29s with 5.5" lift? I have been contemplating putting my 31" AT's on but 1 is pretty bald and 1 is a different brand tire (the 4th BFG is too bald to use other than a spare, so my old spare would be put into rotation). What do you guys think? I was able to do Saran Wrap on only 2" lift with the 29s so how does this compare to that trail?

I personally would rather run the 31" ATs rather than the 29s but I really don't know if the mismatched tire would cause any issue. Im running a 4" lift and 33s (open/open)

The first five miles of Twin Cone are scenic and easy - then you make that sharp left turn and the last couple miles are tougher.
What really counts is if there's snow...
Snow could make the first five anything from easy to impassable.
Snow on the last section would really make it impassable to anything but super machines.
I've done the first five when there was some snow and it was quite enjoyable.
Jim

Steep nasty hill which is bypassable by a steep smooth hill - these pics are on the tougher top section

Optional obstacle

I think there is a bypass here also

James you can do this trail - I'm thinking that the top section is probably not open yet but you could do it anyway if it's dry.
I've run it open on 33's and made everything including the optional stuff.
I have spare D30 axles.
Jim

I think I am putting the 31's on. The baldest one that MUST go in has 2/32nds left. The spare has ~1/32". The other three have 5-7/32nds left. These are the tires/rims that were on when I bought the truck. The tires were never rotated and the truck had really bad alignment when I bought it. So the fronts are awful while the rear tires are still at about half life. I will put the Remington and the balder of the BFG's on the rear and the 2 BFG's with 7/32nds will go on the front. They will go on Friday night after my job interview at Honda.

Well i'd like to make this trip with everyone...But, can someone call the forest service and make sure its open before we all get too excited...I would hate to all convoy up and only be able to run 1/4-1/2 of the trail and have to turn n head home...I tried to call today, but they are only open til 4pm ..maybe also ask if SLaughterHouse is open or not...
(id call but i dont get home from work until 5 or later)..So if one of ya has a free moment and would be so kinda to call, it would help all of us anxious wheelers out a ton!

I already called, I even posted it in this thread. Yes it is open, as for how far we can get up, the forest service could not tell me as they have not sent anyone up there since last season (or so they said). I didn't think to ask if Slaughterhouse was open. I will try again tomorrow to ask about Slaughterhouse. Webster and Red Cone will not open till at least July 4th weekend according to the ranger I talked to so those trails are out as a backup plan.

And yes, South Platte Ranger district is the right # to call.
