Towing Capacity

Does anyone know what the appropriate towing capacity should be to tow a jeep (TJ)?

My wife would like a bigger vehicle to haul our family (Child and Dogs) around. I figured since I would be looking for a vehicle for her over the next 6 months I should find one which could tow my jeep.

The capacity isn't as important and the wheelbase and weight IMHO. I would get a 1/4 ton vehicle at least. ie: A Tahoe, Suburban, Fullsize pickup truck, Sequoia, etc...

A WJ technically has the rating to tow your TJ but I wouldn't do it.

With my old ZJ I would tow a 3700lbs sailboat and that worked ok, however, with my WJ I wouldn't tow that much weight.

With my families Tahoe I would tow a 5000lbs sailboat w/o any worry what so ever. It was so much more stable I wouldn't go to less of a tow vehicle then something of a 1/4 ton rating or more.

I would guess that a Durango would fall into that category then. I get a sweet deal on anything DC

I never towed anything with my old Durango yet it seemed to have the wheelbase IMHO to support one.

Just noticed, you're probably thinking of the newish Durango? That one certainly would. It is based off of the Ram - the old one off of their "compact" pickup. Either would be good though.

the new durango commercials show it towing a big *** boat, but its a commercial. and if you can get a discount on all DC, why not get a compass. i hear that thing could tow a battleship.

I was mentioning before that my Dad had a 99 Durango - that thing pulled like a beast. He had no problems whatsoever pulling his popup trailer that caused him to buy the Durango (and subsequently got me my ZJ). He sold the Durango and got a 4Runner. He loves the heck outta that thing...dunno if he's pulled the trailer with it yet though.

Well I test drove an 07 Hemi tonight. That thing is sweet. Except the lots don't have them optioned the way I would want it. So I will have to order one.

As soon as Chrysler sells out the 06's they will start offering incentives on the 07's I can't freaking wait.

Here is the one I test drove

The new Durangos are ugly as sin in my opinion, but as I said, they pull like no tomorrow. If I was up for a tow rig/baby hauler/gas guzzler, I'd be all over that.

I kind of agree. But the 07's have a redesigned front end that I actually like.
