Made it to Ouray Tuesday. This afternoon we made quick work of Yankee Boy Basin and Governors Basin. Very scenic trails. I especially liked the shelf road up to Governors Basin. Today was a great way to help my father in law get use to his new (to him) rig. I'll be looking for something a little tougher tomorrow. Gotta love the weather up here!!!
Black Bear is open; heard from the Ranger this morning.
We ran Engineer to Poughkeepsie (spelling?) and took Poughkeepsie to the top. We then ran Corkscrew down to the highway.
Unfortunately, a man had a heart attack at the first major obstacle on Poughkeepsie. He was riding down from the lake on a quad (his wife was on her own quad). When they got to the rough spot (kind of a “your choice” area with an easier section to the right and a hard section to the left) the man’s wife was nervous about going down. The man rode his quad down and walked back up to drive his wife’s. He started feeling weak and a couple of passerby wheelers helped him get it down. At that point he just collapsed off the quad and suffered a fatal heart attack. He was in his mid sixties and had a history of heart trouble. We arrived about 10 minutes after he passed away.
My heart goes out to the wife and family. If there is any comfort to be found, the man died following his passion for the outdoors, doing what he wanted to do.
I hope to be that lucky when it's my time.
