JF Trip 2.0

Well guys I think its time we start planning another JF trip.

For those who weren't aware or able to attend our 2013 Moab/CO trip you missed out on a great week long adventure where forum members from all over the country (CT, MD, CA, NC, NM, CO, KS and MO) met up, got to know each other and enjoy what brings us all together...Jeeps and wheelin.

I know several of us tried to make a Rubicon trip this summer but due to many reasons it didn't seem to come together. Nonetheless we need to start planning a trip and Colorado is just the place. Im thinking August of 2015 if that ends up working for others.

I'm not even 100% sure Ill be able to make the trip due to cost and potential family obligations but if we can plan ahead of time the likelihood would increase.

Considering a Colorado only trip would need a lot more logistical planning since trails are further apart I've started to do some research but by no means have anything finalized. I want this trip to be fun, relaxing and challenging so the trails chosen range from moderate to difficult.

Naturally I don’t expect everyone interested to be able to wheel 7 straight days but all are welcome to any number of days they desire or believe they can attend.

Taking into consideration some of the trails we are running the following are recommended:
• Winch
• Working E-brake
• Must be self-sufficient with tools and spare parts
• Lockers front and rear
• CB radio
• 35” or larger tire

The proposed trail agenda:

Day 1: Black Bear Pass to Imogene Pass.
What better way to kick off a trip then with an epic trail ride of Black Bear Pass through Telluride and onto Imogene Pass, the second highest drivable pass in Colorado, which will end in Ouray (our home for the night) and U.S 550 to allow those who trailered a short drive back to their tow rig.

Day 2: Mineral Creek / Poughkeepsie Gulch / California Gulch
The second day of the trip will start off right in Ouray at Mineral Creek. We will run Mineral Creek to Poughkeepsie Gulch to California gulch back to Mineral Creek completing a big loop back to our starting point. Since none of these trails should take much time we should be able to get through at a relaxed pace and still have enough daylight to put in some street miles to our next location for the night… Marble (roughly 2.5 hrs away)

Day 3: Lead King Basin / Devils Punchbowl
The third day will be a loop of Lead King Basin to Devils Punchbowl or vice versa which will include some stunning scenery and one of Colorado’s most famous landmarks, the Crystal Mill. Upon finishing that trail ride we are off to the next stop to either camp or find a motel/hotel near Holy Cross. (roughly 2.5 hours)

Day 4: Holy Cross
Many consider Holy Cross the best hardcore trail in Colorado, complete with stunning scenery, historical points of interest and thrilling obstacles. Due to heavy traffic on weekends I suggest we do this midweek. I’m thinking after this fun day we can just stay put for the night and head out to Wheeler lake the following morning (roughly 2 hours)

Day 5: Wheeler Lake
The fifth day will be comprised of Wheeler lake trail, which ends at none other then beautiful Wheeler lake where a nice lunch and some fishing can be had. Upon completion of this ride we can stay the night nearby or head about an hour away to Chinaman Gulch & Carnage Canyon, our trails for Day 6, and crash for the night.

Day 6: Chinaman Gulch / Carnage Canyon
Coming to the end of our journey are the most extreme trails. To ensure everyone has fun you can choose to run either Chinaman Gulch or Carnage Canyon. Once completed, and hopefully in one piece, we will be off to finish the trip at Independence (2 hours away)

Carnage is no joke

Day7: Independence
Hopefully by day 7 everyone’s rig is still running and able to enjoy the Independence trail system. Independence is composed of four extreme trails: Independence, Freedom, Patriot and Liberty.

Naturally there is still plenty to figure out such as where to stay each night, camp or hotel, parts store locations along the trip, if we should subtract some trails in order to shortening the trip, if all trailheads have ample parking for trailers etc etc

All the final details can be ironed out if the trip becomes a reality amongst the individuals planning to attend. For those who live in Colorado and have any tips, recommendations, or think the agenda for each day is lofty please feel free to share your knowledge!

Thanks guys I hope we can make the trip happen

If the dates get finalized before Jan 2015 I can try to get scheduled on the chosen date, if so I am ready to rock. The Moab shindig was an absolute blast

I'd love to join in on this. Time to start saving!

I never make the same mistake twice - it's more like three or four times.

Nice, I definitely hope we can do it all again. As far as dates go Art do you have to put in for your entire year of vacation by January?

Thanks for the compliment Nate it took a lot of time actually to just get the details to make this thread.

I'm in for sure! Nice job on the trail selection too Lu. Probably will be the trails closer to the front range for me. Chinaman/Carnage, Penrose, possibly Wheeler and Holy Cross.
