Last time I saw one of those deals, I turned off the jeep just because I wanted to. I didn't know there was a guy standing in front of the truck. He gave me the dirtiest look as I went past. I couldn't stop laughing!

They aren't there to ticket you if you're running dirty. No need to kill the engine when rolling by. They use the mobile units to reduce the amount of cars going to the centers. Most people don't know their purpose or how/when to roll by the mobile deals for testing. Seems like a waste of money.

Probably not. From Air Care website-

WHY DOES MY VEHICLE NEED TO BE MODERATELY ACCELERATING?
This is necessary in order to obtain an accurate emissions sample. When a vehicle is either accelerating too heavily or not accelerating at all, the emissions it releases are not truly representative. This is why the RapidScreen test also measures a vehicle’s speed and acceleration. These measurements need to be within the ideal range for the test to be validated.

You need two good tests within the first ten months of the year before you're due for emissions testing.

Emissions test passed - total PITA!

Drove up, the kid looks at the tires shaking his head. I tell him "website says 34" is your limit, these are 33s". He says okay. Fast forward to the next kid...he puts it on the dyno, drops the bar, scratches his head, looks at the tire size. Goes for the carbon copy paper and puts some chicken scratch on it. Tires too big to test....grrrrrrrr

High-tail it home, fire up the compressor and pull the 33s. Swap them with the 31s - on the rear only. Thank you 242 transfer case and your 2WD mode

Pull back in 15 minutes before they close, apologize to the kid I yelled at because he turned me away for tires too big. Karma, you know.

Throttle-Jockey has to try TWICE to actually drive the Jeep within their speed curve on the dyno. He finally gets it right.

The techs pull forward to do the gas cap test and stuff, that guy spent more time inspecting my STOCK exhaust with the mirror than a supermodel spends doing her makeup. I swear that guy WANTED me to fail because he was kept past closing time. I think he was disappointed that everything was intact. While he was doing that, the throttle jockey in the car behind me messed up (front wheel drive) and made the car look like a ping pong ball in the dyno...same turkey that couldn't figure out my apparently stiff gas pedal.

End result? Good for another 2 years, and I'll make sure to drive past their silly roadside testers as much as humanly possible in 2013. I hate the dyno e-tests we have here.

In fact, maybe I'll drive the tow rig past some of their testers in race mode...blow some coal at their precision equipment for giggles

I just had the XJ done. 31's look tight between their safety bars. Thank goodness for the 2wd mode because everyone here in Boulder drives a Subie and the AWD bay had 6 cars waiting, while I was in and out in 15 minutes.
