Colorado Trail Patrol

So there were about 20 of you earlier this year that were interested in the CTP...they have a meeting tonight: http://www.colorado4x4.org/vbb/showthread.php?p=942986

Post up there if you're interested (or let me know and I'll post for you just so they know how many are attending).

And for those that can't make it, post up here if you are still interested and we'll get a private session for us

I talked to Jim about this at the Christmas Caravan. I can't make it tonight...any idea when this "private session" would be?

No, I plan on talking to jeepen on there and seeing if his schedule is completely open, and then posting up here and see when everyone is available. There is also a class on the 19th (2 weeks from today) if that works for anyone else.

I have reservations about this.

Vigilantees on the trail? Can not be a good thing!

Due to these reservations, I have made time to attend the meet at High Country on the 19th.
I work nights, so this is a monatary comentment for me also.

I won't citicize what I don't know or understand, so I will make this effort to understand it, so I can criticize it if I feel it is not a service to the off road community. On the outside looking in, I can not see how this is a good thing.

Anyone else going on the 19th?

Vigilantes? I don't understand Tom - from what I understand, CTP does not intervene at all - they document the situation, try to identify the perps, report license plates to the authorities. The "patrolee" does not come in contact with the person(s) who are acting illegally.

I think after Tom had a bad experience on co4x4, he is extra cautious of things like this.

Jim,

I understand that the CTP member will not be contacting the perp(alleged perp), this is a safety thing, no one wants to get shot. This is also the reason that the CTP is unarmed and must be unarmed. I have yet to see a trail that is worth being shot for.

BUT...

It seems to me someone is making a decision this is a no no and is going to report the perp, this someone is NOT a po po(leo). Someone is taking pics of this "illleagal act", and contacting a po po with the info...

To me...it is quacking and wadling and feathery= a duck?.

1) So it is better to turn a blind eye to something illegal you see?
2) The CTP groups decided what is illegal and what isn't, and depending on the evidence decidedes whether to report it or not. So the CTP member is just reporting what they see.

I fully understand the reservations that Tom has, and I think many of us have had issues where we felt we were in the right, but got hounded for a pic.

I think even if one opted not to join the CTP group, it would be beneficial to learn and understand the politics and channels one incident goes through.

You just made my point for me. This is my concern.
They're not the po po nor are hired and trained "for the greater good" like the po po are.
It must be the libertatian in me Face your accuser kind of thing.

This is why I want to be involved. I need to know who, what, when where.
I might find this a very usefull program and throw my effort towards it.

Just because you are reported doesn't mean you're automatially guilty - they still need to provide proof and that is the just how our justice system works...

What he said

The patrolling wheelers describe the situation and gather any evidence they can safely get (photos, written report), CTP biggies take that info, compile it into the format that LEO wants, and lets LEO handle it. There's no responsibility on our part to do anything about it. We just pass the info on to CTP, then CTP sends it to big daddy. This is definitely not an instant solution. What it's really doing is educating the masses, starting with a small group, as well as helping to improve/maintain a positive image of wheelers with the forest service and law enforcement.
