Asking for a friend

Hi I have a question for all you jeep owners out there. My friend has a 6-cyl 1997 jeep grand Cherokee and she is having issues with the fuel system. She put fuel injector cleaner in a few weeks back but has had no improvement in her jeep. She just recently put $10 dollars of gas in 2 days ago and ran out of gas before she could even get home and she had only drove it around Winterset where we live which has a population of well under 10,000 people so a small town. My thing is I know she shouldn't have ran out of gas but we are at a loss for everything she keeps proper air in her tires, doesn't hot rod around, barely goes out of town just for the simple fact of it eats her gas like there is no tomorrow, she also said that there isn't a consistency on when the fuel light comes on and dings sometimes it comes on and sometimes it doesn't and then will die a short time later. Anyone have any ideas on what we could do to make the jeep more fuel efficient? I suggested having it looked at for a fuel leak or could it be the fuel pump going on? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! If this helps the jeep has almost 212,000 original miles on the motor.

Here is where I would start:
1. When did the fuel mileage drop?
2. What was the fuel mileage before the drop?
3. What is the mileage now?
4. When was is serviced last fuel filter, air filter, plugs, wires, cap. and rotor?
5. What is the compression in the cylinders?

I would also have the o2 sensors tested to make sure they are working. If they aren't it could be running rich which would greatly reduce fuel mileage. Any mom and pop shop would probably check them for free.
